iMovie project on external HD is not working correctly

a 140 minute imovie project on an external hard drive frequently gets stuck and the color wheel starts. When I check force quit imovie is red and not working. What causes this and does anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you

Insufficent free space on your application drive or external drive could cause that. Or very complex edits. Or a slow computer. Or possibly an improperly formatted external drive. External drives must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS in order to store an iMovie library. If you need to reformat be aware that reformatting will erase all data on the drive. So be sure first to back up the drive elsewhere.
