Getting old iMac up and running.

I'm not a Mac user but my son was gifted an older iMac - I'm not sure which one exactly. I've been able to get to the internet recovery but I'm being asked about reinstalling the OS (Maverick?). There is nothing listed in the startup disk option. Pretty baffled as to where to even start or if this is even still a usable device. It looks great and he's really excited about so I'd like to at least try.

Reset Mac Mini to factory default settings I have bought a new Mac Mini, and transferred everything I want to it from my previous MacMini. The old one is about 2012 I think and has mac os 12.6.8 on it. I have found instructions on how to boot it into recovery mode, and erase the drive and then to install the operating system again, prior to passing it on to a new owner. My question is which OS will it install ? The one it has on at present, or the one it originally came with which I think was Mavericks, or will it try to install the latest that is compatible? And do I need to be connected to the internet for it to download the operating system? Please if anyone can advise, I would be grateful. Thanks.

Issue installing OS on an old second-hand iMac I just got an old second-hand iMac and want to install a new OS. The iMAC was wiped so I tried to install the OS from recovery restart. The OS (El Capitan) prompted me to log in with my Apple ID and after that, I got the error message that the OS was temporarily unavailable. I found out that this was probably because my Apple ID did not match with the previous owner's one. Okay. I created a bootable Pendrive and I booted from it but it keeps bringing me back to the recovery window where I can install just the El Capitan even though my pendrive is a bootable Yosemite. Is there any way to kill this Recovery Image of El Capitan? Why is this iMac not booting just from the pen drive? Many thanks

How can I get an older version of Mac OS on my MacBook Air in recovery mode?? Hi really hope someone can help. So I got my daughter a new laptop more suited to her schoolwork and went to wipe her MacBook Air to sell. I did this using recovery mode and erased the hard drive, presumably the correct thing to do. Once that was finished however it won’t re install Mac OS as the software is to new for this older MacBook I think it is around a 2017 model possibly. can anyone help me get this back up and running please.
