Error when trying to retrieve voicemails on iPhone

This Error has become exhausting. Whenever I try to click on greeting, I’m immediately greeted with “The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.mobilephone error 1034.)”. This have become compounded with my discovery that not all voicemails are populating in the voicemail tab. I’ve had to dial out to voicemail to hear them.

Phone Details:

  • IPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iOS 17.6.1
  • T-Mobile carrier

Additionally, here are the steps I’ve tried:

  • Reboot phone
  • Delete T-Mobile Scam Shield App
  • Ensure no VPN’s are running
  • Reset Network Settings
  • Reset All Settings
  • Erase all content and settings, then restore from iCloud Backup
  • Erase all content and settings, then set up as new
  • Erase all content and settings, including ESim, then set both up new.

Nothing seems to be working. This is exhausting as I need to get voicemails as a parent. There needs to be a fix for this issue. Any further thoughts?

You must have a cellular network connection and cellular data turned on for visual voicemail to work. That error code is a carrier error, so if you have cellular data turned on contact your carrier for support.

I’m not so quick to blame the carrier on this either. Because many different phones on many different carriers are experiencing the same issue. I did all the steps Lawrence suggested and that didn’t help. T Mobile did mention they’re working with Apple on a broader fix since so many have this issue, but I’m betting the other carriers are working on the same exercise.

Interesting … my friend and I are both with O2 here in the UK. His iPhone is still on iOS 17 and he doesn’t get a text transcript of voicemail messages, also the default voicemail greeting is a woman welcoming you to thje O2 messaging service, as it always has been. He doesn’t get Error 1034 either and can record a custom greeting.

My iPhone has been updated to iOS18 (now 18.01) and has the Error 1034 preventing any customisation of the Voicemail Greeting. Also, I receive a text message transcription of messages left AND the greeting is now a man’s voice saying that the call is being diverted to the messaging service.

So it would appear to be linked to this change of the messaging service that my phone now has compared to my friends 🤔

I'm having exact same issue, but I'm with Verizon, not T-mobile. I have gone through two different Iphone 13's and now on a Iphone 15. So I'm thinking it is NOT an Apple thing, unless it's a previous IOS software update that threw this into a tailspin. I also have the same issue, being some voicemails go into the voicemail phone app, others have to be plucked out of *86 (Verizon's method to retrieve voicemails). So it's like I have two separate voicemail boxes, neither of which sync with each other. Been battling this for over FIVE MONTHS. Have been escalated multiple times to Verizon's senior tech level. They try this, they try that, then it works for a few days...then back to the same issue. And so yes, this IS exhausting. Every call with Verizon is at least 90 minutes. Getting old. If anyone has any updates, would be most grateful to see what you have done! Interestingly, I have not heard of anyone on a Samsung having this issue. Have any of you heard that from anyone???

Thanks Lawrence. Interesting information. My lingering question is though, why does it have the word "Apple" in it? Does that mean on a Samsung, the "Apple" will be replaced with "Samsung"? I don't know. Haven't had any interaction or responses from Samsung users to see if they are having similar issues. I'm working with "executive level" Verizon reps, trying to figure it out. Wondering if I was to try a Galaxy, would it replicate the issue????
