What settings must be on for phone to transmit AirTag info

My husband took my Luggage with an AirTag in it for a ride to see if I could find it. He had his iPhone with Bluetooth enabled on with him.. yet the AirTag location didn’t get updated. Are there certain settings that must be turned on on iPhone for it to be used to send info to iCloud on AirTag location?

His iPhone must have the following enabled, as a minimum:

  • Location Services
  • Bluetooth

In order for his phone to relay the tag's ID, and his phone's GPS location to the Apple servers, that phone must have an active Internet connection, either by Wi-Fi or cellular data.

The key is to understand that Apple did not design these tags for tracking ... at least, not in realtime. Only GPS trackers would have this capability. They are best used to help you locate a missing or misplaced item, like your car keys.
