Why won't my MacBook Air let me reset my Password?

My MacBook Air is not giving me an option to reset my password, even though I’ve entered the password over 10 times. I know I’m entering the right password, but it keeps saying password failed. The only options on the screen are to Shut Down, Restart, or Sleep Mode and I’ve tried to force restart is multiple times with no change. Any one have any clue what the solution can be?
