Final Cut Pro will not start anymore

Mysteriously Final Cut Pro has been unable to start. This is very recent - within the last few days.

FCP will start - then there's a beachball that never goes away - I've waited 5 to 10 minutes before using "force quit" to kill the application. This then will trigger some sort of error report with data sent somewhere - presumably sent to developers. I tried rebooting my computer to fix the issue but that didn't fix anything.

FCP is unusable now.

I suspect a recent installation of software has somehow corrupted Final Cut Pro. I don't know what to do. I feel like I'm using a janky Microsoft Windows system.

I started FCP immediately followed by the keyboard sequence: option+⌘ →

Then a window popped up asking if I should delete preferences. I deleted my preferences and FCP started without the beachball. I created a library/event/project and FCP appears to be working now.

Oh, wow, I only have 18GB on my SSD. It was around 160GB of free space a couple of days ago. Not sure what happened. A couple of days ago I pushed many media files to the iCloud - by selecting something roughly phrased as 'delete downloads' (in Finder while navigated to a folder in the iCloud). I'll have to see what's going on with regard to SSD space.

You need more space.

You should seriously consider getting an external SSD to store your libraries.

Meanwhile, you can probably recover a lot of space immediately.

Go to Final Cut Pro->Settings->Playback and turn OFF “background render@;

then in

Final Cut Pro->Settings->Import turn OFF the options to transcode. You don’t need them and they generate huge files.

Finally:

Select your library in FCP browser sidebar and do File->Delete Generated Library Files…

Check all the boxes, including All Render Files.

Quit FCP and see how much space you have. Better?
