I have to return my old iPhone and it needs to be erased first. The phone will not charge. I was told to use the Find My App to erase it. The app still says erase pending. How will I know if it has been properly erased?

Once you have requested to remove the device from your account, it will send a message to your old iPhone.
If your iPhone doesn’t have a connection, it likely won’t get the message, meaning you cannot reset.

If it can't be charged, nor turned on, you can't erase it. You'll need to discuss the issue with AT&T directly.
You can use the Find My app to erase your phone, but the phone still needs to be turned on with an internet connection in order to receive the command and perform the erase operation. If the Find My app still says erase pending, it would indicate that your phone has not been able to receive and execute the erase command.
To erase your iPhone to Factory Settings, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase all Content and Settings. Now your data will be uploaded to iCloud and your iPhone is now ready to be given away.

Does AT&T require you to turn in the iPhone working? If so, have you looked into getting it repaired for that?
