how much additional disk space is needed to download somthing

Last week, tried to download something to my older Mac. Yesterday, I tried to update the OS on my iPad. Both times, I got a message saying "insufficient available disk space". Is there a way to find out how much additional available disk space I need; am I short by 1 KB or 10 GB?

If your drive icon is on the desktop, you can simply select it then, in the menu bar, click File > Get Info and the Finder will display the drive info, including the Capacity, the Available space and the Used space.

You may also find drive info using the guidance here:

Best practices say that you should always allow 10%-15% of the drive's total capacity available as free space, i.e. a 1TB drive should have 100-150GB space available. To fall much below the 10% threshold risks poor performance and even an inability to startup.
