I want to review App Store - not an app in the store - Free should not require payment option

When asking the Apple App Store to list “free apps” most if not all apps listed require a payment option; this is not ‘free’; you are signing up for a service and giving your financial information out and authority to charge.

If a product or service is ‘free’ stop requesting payment, and give the product or service away - FREE

Requiring a payment method means Apple wants to see you have a payment method, not that you will be charged.

Apple's official support articles present multiple statements* about situations requiring the presence of a payment method at times, even for free items. You do not always have to have one, but if you are encountering one of those situations then you have no option but to enter a valid payment method if you wish to continue downloading. The payment method may not be charged if you also have account balance or the item is free, but the payment method has to be present. This next article lists valid payment methods for different countries but note that in this situation Apple Account balance alone apparently may not meet the requirement and you need to use another payment method until you find one that satisfies Apple's requirement (often a credit or debit card): Payment methods that you can use with your Apple ID - Apple Support .

If you have already entered a payment method, use the “Add a payment method” link above to check it. If a message appears in red there is a problem with it. If the information is still correct and current, contact your financial institution. Also check this resource --> If your payment method is declined in the App Store or iTunes Store - Apple Support

It is FREE, you will not be charged to download any app that is free. That is what free means. You are still going to need to have a valid payment method, but will not be charged.

Most of those apps that you see that are free to download also contain optional in-app purchases that will charge your payment method if you choose to use them. Developers have to pay to make those apps available to you and it also costs them time and money to continually update those apps. They offer these optional methods to offset these costs in hopes you will enjoy the free download and continue to support the app with:

  • Subscription
  • Free Trial
  • In-App Purchase

If the developers for these apps never made any money by people actually using these optional methods to offset their costs, you would not see any apps to download. Without a valid payment method, there is no chance that any of these could be used.

Add a valid payment method and download all the free app you want and you will never be charged. You may not be able to take full advantage of the app or be able to use all of the features, but at least you were able to download it free.
