The first thing I recommend when you have trouble with an email account is to remove it from your phone and then add it back.

Go to Settings>Mail>Account. Find your Gmail account, tap on it and then select the option to delete it. To add it back, go to Settings>Mail>Account and select Add Account.

For what it's worth, I find that Gmail works better with the Gmail app.
