Home bar do not work

Hi has anyone ever had their home bar suddenly stop working to exit apps/close open tabs? If so how did you fix it? I can still swipe up to unlock and check notifications once unlocked. But I can use the home bar when I use my phone horizontally like how the possition of your phone when you play games, but if I use it vertically like how we usually hold our phone, the home bar wouldnt work. I have an iPhone Xs max and I did not even updated it to the latest version of ios. I tried force restarting my iphone and its still the same.
