Kernel Panics Ventura 13.6.9

Hi,

My iMac 2017 model has random crashes. Etrecheck speaks of Kernel Panic.

It happens most frequently when its idle and does so too when running in safemode. Vram has been reset, diagnostics tool has run and hard drives function properly.

Could someone check the Etrecheck file?

Thanks in advance,

Mischa

The first thing you want to do is remove the files in the Launch folders where it shows Executable Not Found. These are not going to work correctly and run every time you start your computer. They are shown in the Clean up section toward the bottom of the report.

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.epicgames.launcher.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/us.zoom.rooms.daemon.plist

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.iBoysoft.ntfshelperd.plist

Next I would move on to the files that are unsigned. There is no reason why a legitimate company would not be using Signed software. It may also be the case that they are old files that have been transferred from previous OS versions. Delete these as well.

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.oracle.java.Helper-Tool.plist

/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Resources/com.oracle.java.Helper-Tool.plist

To get to these files go to Finder > Go > Go to Folder and paste each one in the text box. You can then drag it to the trash. Don't forget the "~" character at the start of the first one. Restart your computer after all have been deleted.

If you still have trouble, go to  > System Settings > General > Login Items and shut off Rational Intellectual Holdings Limited if you see it as a background process to see if that makes a difference.

In addition there is no evidence that you backup the computer which is shortsighted and an absolute guarantee that you will lose all of your data unless you fix this problem. You computer is 7 years old and uses a mechanical HD based Fusion Drive. At 7 years old we see a LOT of HD based failures!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your KP's can be caused by a failing HD, that is a common cause of KPs.

Before you do anything and I mean anything please get an External Hard Disk such as a OWC Mercury Elite Pro and begin using Time Machine to backup. If you are unfamiliar with Time Machine please refer to Back up your Mac with Time Machine. If you use iCloud that is helpful however iCloud is NOT a backup, not even close. Time Machine is Apple's backup technology. You can also use a cloning app such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to backup using an external HD. Many experienced users use both Time Machine and a cloning app because when it comes to backup redundancy is wise, why because backups can fail too! If you decide to take the redundancy route, you will need 2 separate EHD's, why because when the External Hard Disk fails you will lose ALL of your backup. Don't laugh, it happens all the time.

It had a clean install yesterday by the previous owner. He had it standing still for a year and a half and never experienced any problems as far as I can tell.
He is prepared to take it back if it is a serious issue though.

Just FYI, a clean install was not performed yesterday or at least it was not done correctly. There are still files showing that were installed 5 years ago that would not be there after a clean install. If it were me I would take him up on the offer to return it. This is just not a good position to be in when getting a device.

Sleep is unnecessary and should be disabled. Shut for long absences/idle overnights (i.e. do not manual-sleep), and for regular operation, use the settings exactly as shown below (reboot after changes), should fix.

Additionally, avoid manual sleeping your Mac, instead use the Lock Screen settings to switch the display off on timer:

Take it back. If you cannot afford a new Mac, then buy a used one from a reputable source such as Macsales.com. Buying used from:

  • Ebay
  • Nextdoor
  • Marketplace
  • Local PC shop
  • Craigslist
  • Your neighbor, best friend, acquaintance
  • etc.

is NEVER a good idea. Why, simple in most cases these machines are NOT setup correctly per Apple's instructions in What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac and the computers NEVER work correctly OR you are simply inheriting someone else's issues.

If you must buy used either buy an Apple Refurbished Mac from Apple.com or used from a reputable reseller such as Macsales.com.

DriveDX doesn't give me any options to select from. It's a trial version, maybe that's why. I decided to follow your and Jim's advice and have contacted the previous owner. I will look for a refurbished model.c

This morning I reinstalled Ventura according to the guide you posted. When it booted up for the first time after that it immediately crashed again, this time without the migrated data from my Macbook.

Thank you all very much for your advice. It is much appreciated. I will buy a good quality hard drive for my backup data once I have a refurbished iMac.
