How to track a lost AirTag effectively using FIndMy?

My son has lost an AirTag from his school bag yesterday, likely when playing football in local park at lunchtime. Since then it looks like it has moved around the park a couple of times in evening. We marked it as lost and gave a phone number to call and went to look for it in the area where it was showing, with no luck. As we moved around we used Find My to try to connect to play sound but again nothing. We left it overnight and now it’s showing in another location in park. I can’t quite get my head around how it works. How near does an iPhone need to be for it to pick up a location? Is the AirTag location on find my iPhone just the location of the nearest iPhone at the time? I don’t understand how it’s moving around the park unless someone is just chucking it around randomly. And why can’t we find it when it’s supposedly there?

Hi lindsay192,

It’s prob not moving and it’s in the park, you’re just going to have to keep trying until you get close enough to hear it.

It’s not using GPS so it’s not precise and is dependent upon other people’s Apple devices with Bluetooth. Unfortunately, wide open places (like parks) without a lot of traffic are problematic, especially outside where you can’t control the ambient noise to hear the little guy.

The varying locations might give you a clue to its more likely general location, but otherwise it’s a hunt. Until it really starts moving you still have hope. 🤓 Good luck!

This article helped me when I had the same issue and I eventually found it.
