suggested search not functioning the same literally all of a sudden

I need help because this has 100% ruined my work flow. So say on my iPhone or Mac I type the letters B A C into the search field and then click the word Bacon from the suggested search pop up, the next time I click\tap into the field the whole word is there for me to add on to, say Bacon Sandwich.

I just got the M4 OLED iPad and it's NOT doing that anymore. If I type BAC, click Bacon and then tap back into the field it just says BAC. I just tried it on the iPad that this is replacing, an M2 Pro, and it's not doing it all of a sudden on there as well. I know for a fact that it used to work as recently as less than 24 hours ago.

I just tried it again on Mac and iPhone, no problem. iPad no joy.

It's driving me crazy. Is this a setting hidden somewhere that they added and didn't tell us about? Or have I gone crazy?

Please spare me the boilerplate "Did you restart?" stuff, this isn't my first Apple headache rodeo.

Sorry if I suggest things you've already checked, but have you checked the Safari settings to see if somehow Search Engine Suggestions and Safari Suggestions have been turned off? If they're still on, does toggling them off and back on do anything useful? Also, when the suggestions list comes up, where does it say that the suggestions are coming from, Google (or whatever search engine you're using), or something else?

One possibility: Settings -> General -> Keyboard. See if all the relevant options are turned on. If so, perhaps toggling them off and back on would help.

And a friendly suggestion: if you don't want people here to offer things you already have tried, just say what you've tried. No one here is psychic, so we can't know what your level of expertise might be or what steps you've already taken unless you list them.

Regards.

Safari suggestions has always been off; was never a fan. Search Engine suggestions is on and is working. That is to say it's giving me the suggestions. I did try to toggle it on and off at their suggestion and no go.

It's a hard problem to describe so I'll try to be more concise.

Say I type the word "Carrot" with the goal of finding a carrot cake recipe. I type Carrot, click Carrot Cake Recipe in the Search Engine Suggestions and it loads the search. But say now I want Carrot Cake Recipe Low Calorie. On my Mac and iPhone(and the iPad as of yesterday)I could simple tap up there and add the words Low Calorie to the words Carrot Cake Recipe already in the field. Now that doesn't work. If I tap it deletes Carrot Cake Recipe and puts Carrot(the start of the search "chain" if you will)

Oddly enough if I use my Pencil to Scribble Carrot and go from there well it works as it should.

As an experiment I just factory reset my wife's iPad and set it up as a new device...sure enough it's doing the same thing albeit less often. That tells me there is some backend nonsense going on yet again.

It's completely destroyed my workflow. It's turned 10 searches into 100.

Do you have an iPad running 17.6.1? Care to try out a search and report what happens?

Sorry, didn't mean to come off rude. Just spent 2 hours with Apple for them to just blame "Google being down". I also know how these forums usually work. Someone gives you a long winded "I understand you are having problem X. Try this long list of obvious things anyone over the age of 15 has already tried."

I've tried literally everything I can think of. Turning off iCloud, back on, keyboard settings, even tried hooking up a USB keyboard. Private relay off.

Nothing works. Plus, as you'll notice, I tried it on a different iPad and it's not working as well. Almost as if there has been A) some change to how it's supposed to work or B) yet another hidden settings change they make without telling anyone.

Oddly enough though if I use pencil to scribble in a search...well it works just fine. On-screen keyboard, Siri, even a usb keyboard it doesn't work.

Well, we see a lot of people over the age of 15 who have no idea what to try. :-)

Anyway, barring someone else chiming in with thoughts, let's try to narrow the field a bit. Where are you doing these searches when this fails? In the search field for searching the entire device ? In Safari? Or where, exactly? (and forgive me if you said already, but I don't see it). That may provide some clues for tracking down the problem.

In safari. It worked as of less than 24 hours ago. No changes were made to the iPad settings wise or software. It's just literally 24 hours older, that's it.

You can actually see the text be changed back into what you originally typed as if it's getting confused.

The tech on the phone tried it with his iPad and it was working as it should. Then he viewed my screen and I showed him exactly what was happening and they were stumped.

A quintessential Apple problem if there ever was one. We can do amazing things with these devices that we will do once or twice a year but the stuff we do 100s of times a day? Changes at a moments notice.

I just tried it on my iPad running an iPadOS version not to be mentioned (wink, wink) with DuckDuckGo as my search engine and it seems to work correctly, assuming I'm understanding your issue correctly. So perhaps this is an odd glitch in the most recent official release of iPadOS that will be corrected in the not-too-distant future. Either that or is a totally wierd coincidental happening with both Google and Yahoo.

Sorry, I don't know what more to say. I'm at this point completely baffled as to what the problem might be since, to the best of my knowledge, those web suggestions probably don't come from Apple, and I can't think of any way absent an update to iPadOS unless it perhaps was an automatically-installed security update. Apple doesn't list any released since iPadOS 17.6.1 in early August, though they could have snuck one out.
