I am playing a game on a macbook air and the pointer, which usually disappears when playing other games, remains on top of the window. it is a little distracting and i am wondering if there is a way to make it disappear?

That's normally up to the developer to build into their app. I don't know of any built-in way to hide the pointer, though perhaps someone else here has found a trick I haven't. You can use the third-party utility Better Touch Tool which, I believe, allows you to set a keyboard combination to hide the pointer:
It's not a free app and it may be overkill for just this single need. It's not very expensive, though; $12 US.
