Microsoft PowerPoint for MAC
I have to be able to open and amend PowerPoint for work but prefer to use MAC
it is painfully slow - any ideas??

You haven't shared what Apple hardware configuration, operating system, or PowerPoint version you are using. The current version of PowerPoint for Mac is v16.88.1.
Your observed slowness of PowerPoint may be caused by using an older version, a very large PowerPoint document, or attempting to open PowerPoint shortly after booting your Mac when many other operating system "house-keeping" processes are also demanding resources. Among these would be Spotlight indexing your storage and/or Time Machine backups running.
Your only other approach may be to close all other open applications to free up System resources for PowerPoint; wait a few minutes after power on to allow System activity to quiet down; reboot your Mac if you are not in the habit of rebooting it daily, or post your issues in Microsoft's dedicated PowerPoint community for Mac users.
