unstoppable "System Extension Error" after update to Sonoma 14.6.1

After updating my macbook air M2 to latest sonoma version (14.6.1), I get "System Extension error" at startup, after going to privacy and security setting it says: "some system software requires your attention"

after clicking "Details", It says: "system software from the following developers was updated and the system needs to be restarted before it can be used."

Listed names are "Apple Inc-Updated / Motu-Updated", then I Click on OK and after putting my password and choosing to restart, System Restarts.

after loading , I Recieve the exact "System Extension error" Again, Like Nothing has changed! Everything is just like before and again it needs to restart. I did it again and again and no change at all.

Now my mac doesn' t recognise my soundcard (Ultralite MK3 Hybrid)

before this update my OS was a lower version (14.0) of Sonoma And everything was working nicely.

what fixes or workarounds I've already tried:

1. from Startup Options I Select “Reduced Security” and enable “Allow user management of kernel extensions from identified developers” to allow installation of software that uses legacy kernel extensions.

2.uninstall and remove all drivers and installed it again with the latest version that is availabe in website, the one was installed before and was working fine.

3. Repair startup disk with First Aid

4. disconnect second monitor and disable any mouse or touchpad assistant to adjust privacy settings.

5. do all the thing that mentioned above with and without connecting soundcard.

6. remove motu .kext files from library, restart, to Solve "apple Inc-Update", then after restart the error was gone, after that install motu driver, restart, recieve Error and "Apple Inc-Updated / Motu-Updated" is there again.

I was having exactly the same problem, from not being able to allow the UAD software to not being able to “personalize” software updates for 14.7 and 15.0. Two stuck loops, it seems.

I managed to fix it as follows (Mac Mini M1):

I have done a clean install of MacOS from settings (erase all content and settings under general). However needed to perform a DFU flash from another Mac (https://support.apple.com/en-us/108900) during the process as it failed to re-activate itself in recovery mode. But finally, I can now report UAD working again on 14.6.1. Did multiple reboots to be sure, all working well.

So either the clean install or the DFU did the trick. Hope it might help some of you, although clean installation is of course a pain to perform.

I too have had the same problems since I bought a new Mac mini however eventually the extension started working, then the next day the Motu 828mk3 wasn't recognised again by Cubase 13 but I noticed the orange microphone icon in the menu bar which was set to isolation mode, I reset it to standard mode and now everything is working including my old 828 mk2.

I therefore thought I would clone the system on an external drive as a backup in case it stopped working again on my internal drive, I was astounded to find that when stating up from the external drive the link to the interfaces were broken again.Has anybody had the same experience of audio interfaces only working on an internal drive and not on an external drive?

I decided to upgrade to Sequoia as a clean install on an external drive but it's back to the previous problems with the motu kext with the error message so I will not be updating my internal drive in case that stops working again!

Update - Success:

I performed the DFU revive process from my Intel MBP but on rebooting the Mac Studio, the extensions issue was still present. I uninstalled UAD SW, and reinstalled 14.7 over top of previous install, reinstalled UAD SW….. STILL stuck in a loop. Uninstalled UAD, Ran clear staging terminal commands, rebooted into recovery, ran panic medic terminal command there, rebooted, reinstalled fresh copy of UAD SW, Clicked ALLOW in Privacy & Security, flipped the toggles to allow the two extensions that needed permission, rebooted, and FINALLY got connected to my Apollo 8!!!

I hope everyone effected can find a solution and get back to work ASAP.

My extensions folder contained;

HighPointIOP.kext

HighPointIRR.kext

SoftRAID.kext

DigiDal.kext

UAD2System.kext

I uninstalled the UAD software and all went back to normal.

I pulled EVERYTHING out, clean installed UAD and got flagged on restart for the UAD kext as well as Apple, even though there is NO Apple kexts in the extensions folder.

Apple has borked this release, IMO.

  1. Uninstalled following manufacturer directions
  2. Cleared Preferences, LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons and Extensions from ~/Library & Library
  3. Booted into recovery to confirm security settings
  4. Cleared the remaining Apple, Inc. kext message
  5. Rebooted
  6. Verified no pending kext updates
  7. Rebooted
  8. Installed following manufacturer directions
  9. Restarted
  10. Entered the doom loop again
  11. Checked forums: RME hardware, UAD Hardware, Macfuse, etc. - all experiencing this issue with both 14.6.1 and the latest 15 beta/rc

I've worked in software for 20 years and I've never seen an incremental update (e.g. 14.6 to 14.6.1) wreak this much havoc. I'd understand if it was just the major update to 15. I might even understand in a 14.7. Waking up to find an auto-applied security update has bricked your audio I/O and spending days reading about it with no reasonable response from any of the manufacturers (who we have to assume are working with Apple ahead of these releases) or Apple is the problem.

Same here. I pulled EVERYTHING out of Library > Extensions, and then did a clean install of UAD software and on restart, I get prompted to pay attention to both UAD and Apple extensions, even though there are NO Apple kext files in the extensions folder.

Oddly enough, I'm not having this issue with the latest Sequoia beta in my Intel MBP. Seems related exclusively to Apple Silicon machines?

IN in the same boat go g around in circles ..update my M1 to Sonoma 14.6.1 and lost contact with my UAD Apollo twin. Uninstalled software..Re installed software only to get 'System Extension Error' restart the computer..then it continues with same message each time. I think the problem is Apples end in the accepting of the download as my 'Privacy & Security - Security - says some software requires my attention before it can be used. - Click Details and I get the Universal Audio - Updated in a pale orange ( not full accepted orange mode. Why is apple not granting permission for this update please ??

I have spoken to Apple twice now and I think it's best only focusing on the security issue as opposed to extensions, as the UAD Apollo's etc. not working are a symptom not the cause.

I explained that I cannot upgrade my security settings in Recovery mode, which for me clearly points to a bug in the OS.

However, I was instructed to reinstall Sonoma which has already been shown not to work. I was also advised that my startup disk could be corrupted however they didn't have an answer when I explained (as they well know) that I am one of many people having this issue.

Next call is scheduled for Monday - hopefully we won't have to wait that long for a fix as it's already been a week...

This is important and VITAL if you want to keep all your data and apps on your Mac, when updating to a new macOS such as 14.7 (doesn't have the UAD issue).

While trying to update, I got the error "Failed to personalise update". The issue was not in my network, but in the system settings. To get rid of this error and to finally update to a later macOS, go to system settings, go to your name, then iCloud, click on the "Show more apps", select Find my and turn off both options. Restart the Mac to apply the changes.

This worked for me, as I was finally able to update. Now, I am writing this message on the 14.7 and my UAD drivers are finally working.
