Why isn't my Apple Pencil connecting / pairing to my iPad Air?

I have an iPad Air and just bought a Apple Pencil Pro to go with it but the Apple Pencil is not completely magnetic to my iPad and wont pop up to connect. Did I buy the wrong pencil or is this one faulty?

What specific model of iPad Air do you have? The Apple Pencil Pro works only with these iPads:

iPad Pro 13-inch (M4)
iPad Pro 11-inch (M4)
iPad Air 13-inch (M2)
iPad Air 11-inch (M2)

If you have a different model of iPad, then yes, you bought the wrong Pencil. If you have one of those two models, post back with more details and someone may be able to offer suggestions.
