Macbook pro m1 chip not connecting to LG monitor via usb-c

My Macbook m1 is able to connect through HDMI to my 4k LG monitor but not through USB-C.

It keeps turning on and off (the screen), showing up shortly in my display settings and disappearing again.

What I've tried;

  • buying different kind of usb-c cables even the €80 from Apple
  • Switching on and off the screen, even getting it off power completely
  • Resetting the screen
  • Starting my mac in safe mode
  • Removing all log-in items from Macbook
  • Changing Herz for external screen
  • Tried all of the usb-c ports on my mac
  • Calling with apple support (told me mac was fine call LG)
  • Calling with LG support (told me screen was fine call apple)
  • Tried switching the screen on with macbook plugged in, and without

Works fine with my partners Macbook (Air m1 2020 and Air m3 2024)

I am getting desperate .. dont know what else to do ?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.6

I don't know what ports your LG monitor has – but if it has multiple USB-C ports, make sure that you are using the right one.

There is one Dell monitor, for example, that has three USB-C ports:

  • Video + Data
  • Upstream - for connecting hub ports to a computer if you're using the DisplayPort or HDMI inputs
  • Downstream - for accessories

Presumably only the first one would accept video from a computer.

31.5", 3840x2160 pixel monitor, refresh rate of 60 Hz. Appears to have DisplayPort, HDMI, and USB-C ports. The LG site is in mostly in Dutch, but run through an automated translator, it says

"USB Type-C™ ports enable 4K display, data transfer, and charging of connected devices (up to 90W) all simultaneously through a single cable."

There is nothing at all unusual about the resolution or refresh rate of this monitor, so my first suspicion would fall upon the USB-C cable. Current versions of macOS are supposedly very picky about transmission errors, as in not wanting to see any, and deliberately cutting resolution or cutting off the display if errors are detected. But you say you've tried all sorts of cables – including the Apple one (which, if it is the Thunderbolt 4 one, should be overkill in terms what's needed to support this monitor.)

I'm not sure what to tell you.

mine is 0.7 m currently. I also tried with the official apple one but that didnt work either.

the current one i am trying with is:

  • USB 4 Gen 3x2

more info here:

but i tried it with all - it works for a day or two but then stops working. my partner has macbook air m1 and macbook air m3 and both work fine with the screen and the cable so it seems to be my mac.

i also tried hooking it up to a apple studio screen, that worked fine but i am still willing to believe that i can work with a screen thats less than €1500 >.<
