Excellent advice. I did that last year and had my order in by 5:01 am and got my phone on release day.

Why don’t I have this option? It lets me select my iPhone, color , storage, trade in , finance , carrier and apple care coverage … but at the bottom , the “get ready for pre order” button is grayed out ..

You can order one from Apple's website Friday the 13th at 5:00 AM Pacific time.
