Transfer data of “old” iPad

My son busted the charging port of his “old” iPad - it’s running on iOS 17.6.1. His grandma gave him an IPad Air 2. And we wanted to transfer his information - apps, data, pictures, etc.. but neither the automatic transfer worked and when I went to manual set up and restore from iCloud, it didnot let me, citing difference in the IOS. What can I do ?

Other than talking the old iPad in to get the port repaired, not much to do. You can add his email accounts to the iPad Air 2 to get his contacts, email and calendar and notes. And you can have him log in, in Settings ➜ Apple ID to get his iCloud content except for the backup and add his account for the store in Settings ➜ iTunes & App Stores for his purchases.

To restore the backup, the current device needs to be using an iOS version that is the same or newer than the one used to make the backup.

If the iPad Air 2 is too old to upgrade the same or greater iOS version as your son's iPad, then it cannot take the backup.
