2021 M1 iMac external monitor

There's lots of different posts on this topic but not a specific answer that helps me.

I have a 2021 M1 iMac and want to connect a second monitor. I am trying to determine which would be the best fit and the display would appear similar to the Apple one.

I found some reddit posts from years ago but the ones suggested are discontinued.

Can any one suggest a 24-27" display that will be plug and play for me?

thanks!

Most monitors with modern video inputs (DisplayPort, HDMI, USB-C, or Thunderbolt) would be plug-and-play, with the right cable or adapter cable.

The 27" Apple 5K Studio Display would be the closest to your 24" M1 iMac in terms of sharpness and appearance. That monitor goes for $1599+ USD. I believe there are two other 27" 5120x2880 pixel monitors on the market: one from Samsung that may be even more expensive, and one from LG that might cost less.

Given the high prices of 5K monitors, a lot of people go with good 27" 4K ones. You sacrifice some sharpness, but you can find some with IPS panels and near-100% coverage of sRGB for as little as $300 – $350 USD. Even if you look for ones with things like USB-C connectivity and good coverage of a wide gamut (DCI-P3 or Adobe RGB), you would probably be talking half of the price of the 27" Apple Studio Display, or less.

Note that some monitors have built-in speakers, microphones, and Webcams, while others don't.
