That is correct, you cannot update to iOS 17 with an iPhone 7.


You are also not able to update to iOS 16 with an iPhone 7.


So, your iPhone 7 is quite a bit out of date. You need a new phone to run newer iOS versions.


Ideally, you would want a phone that can run the new iOS 18. That would be an iPhone XR or higher model.

That's correct, if you own an iPhone 7. Just like you could not update that phone to iOS 16. iPhone 7 cannot be updated past iOS 15.8.3. It doesn't have the hardware required to support anything higher. If you need higher iOS versions, then you'll have to retire your very old, out of date iPhone and purchase a much newer, more modern iPhone.

You cannot pick and choose an iOS version. What you get is Settings > General > Software update > [All options are available here]
