When will Apple Intelligence be available in Europe?

I pre ordered the iPhone 16 pro Max natural titanium, but I live in the Netherlands. So I’m wondering if we’re getting the new iOS features too like apple intelligence.

Apple Says That

“Apple Intelligence first launches in US English, and will quickly expand to include localised English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK in December, with additional language support — such as Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish — coming next year.”

Now they mention France and Spain, which are part of the European Union 🇪🇺 which means we might be getting it next sometime year.

No, for now at least you will not get Apple Intelligence. Whether Apple can or will ever make it available in the EU is something no one here, who are all just your fellow users, will know. It appears that it would take alterations to the EU's Digital Markets Act, but that's uncertain since only Apple knows the full depth of the issue. We'll just have to wait and see, but for the foreseeable future at least, I very much doubt it.

Regards.

Apple will not compromise users security or privacy to introduce a feature in the EU that will be required to be made available for access by other devices. It will be up to the regulators in the EU to make a decision if it will violate the DMA rules put in place there. They have been down that road before.

@lkrupp Any source for this?

If you mean discussions between Apple and the EU, I believe that the sources are news sites, not anything official from Apple. At least I've not seen Apple say anything publicly, though I could easily have missed it.

In any case, there's no use in belaboring the point. As of right now, Apple Intelligence is not coming to the EU (nor China). What if anything happens in the future we'll all just have to wait and see.

The EU antitrust regulation, 'Digital Markets Act' (DMA), requires that the features of a platform are also accessible to third parties (e.g. via API), to prevent Big Tech from acting as gatekeepers.

To comply with the EU DMA, Apple should make Apple Intelligence features accessible to other developers.

While I believe the Digital Markets Act is beneficial, in this case it fails to acknowledge the different levels of trust that consumers have toward various Big Tech companies.

I personally would never want my personal data (accessible by Apple Intelligence) to be made available to Meta, Google, and other App developers.

That's it

Sadly they're likely not a precursor to EU support.

French will be in there to accommodate the 167 million French-speaking Africans and 11.6m French-speaking Canadians among others. It's an official language in 27 countries!

Spanish is an official language in 20 countries and has about 500 million native speakers worldwide including 43 million in the US.

You might be able to get it working if you're a French or Spanish speaker and if setting your region to one of those other countries that have French or Spanish as an official language doesn't cause you other problems (localised spell check annoyances for example). I'd hope that with all the work they're doing to make it private, Apple Intelligence will come to the EU sooner rather than later.

Over the course of the next year, Apple Intelligence will expand to more languages, like Chinese, English (India), English (Singapore), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese, and others.
This proves that they're surely working on bringing it to the EU next year.

Actually not at all. Adding languages is done by localizing an app with Strings provided in each language and for AI models, they will also need to be built to support the language. That is much different than seeing if local regulations will allow a service. If it was strictly a language issue, they could have made it available in all regions using the US English language.

Apple is not going to sacrifice users privacy and security to bring a feature to a region that will require them to compromise this very important principle. We will just have to wait and see what happens.
