Apple Credit: Does Paying Off Installments Early Lower Monthly Payments or Just Shorten the Term?

I want to know when you pay extra off your credit plan does this impact the term you pay for or does it reduce the amount you pay monthly?

I followed the instructions as per Apple [Card-Monthly Installments-Pay early] but all it did was deduct the extra payment which was for an installment from my general amount on the credit card. Monthly Installments am I able to do monthly installments on a purchase that exceeds my credit limit? I ask because it seems as though I was able to do monthly installments on a M2Max for ~$5800 but my credit limit is $4700. It says the installment plan is active but the first initial charge has been pending for 18 hours now.

It shortens the number of months you have installment payments.
