iOS 18.0 Adds Calendar Icon Next to ALL All-Day Events!

Somebody at Apple decided that it would be a good idea to add a bright colorful calendar icon next to each and every all-day calendar event, as part of the update to the Calendar app in iOS 18.0.

It looks equally ridiculous and distracting on both my iPhone and iPad. And there is no way to turn it off or remove it. I would have to update each and every birthday, holiday, all day event, etc. with a specific time frame in order to remove that icon. I have hundreds of all-day calendar entries, that would be a monumental and time consuming task.

I rely upon those all-day events to show me the important stuff for the day, whether they are actual all-day events or not. They are presented to me right on top, in List view on all of my devices, which is the only view that I really use. Those all-day events are up there for a reason, but they are not always the only or most important event of any given day, and now they are going to be a big distraction.

I left feedback for Apple on the Support site. I would suspect that more people are going to complain about this as iOS 18.0 continues to get rolled out and installed.

It’s just the general font size overall. I had mine on the largest apparently. I was adding things to my control panel and I noticed the font control, so I added it and when I did I realized my font was on the largest size so when I made it smaller everything got smaller and now there is much more room on my calendar. I wish you could change the font size on individual apps though because now if I want more room on my calendar everything else has to be smaller too. Its the oblong white block with Aa on it named text size.

Per my initial post, I’ve already done that. My experience in submitting feedback to Apple Support over the past 30+ years is that they really don’t care. They don’t really pay attention to feedback submitted by customers. These Discussions seem to yield greater results. There is strength in numbers voicing issues indirectly back to Apple, as well as Users coming up with workarounds to issues that Apple won’t address. The reality is that Apple does whatever it wants to, and if it decides to change this functionality, they will on their terms and timing. It is what it is.

I just came here with the same complaint. It looks like garbage on my iMac. Who on earth thought this was a good idea??

I believe it was added because you can now have reminders on the calendar as well. The icons tell you whether or not the thing is an appointment or a reminder. Reminders have an empty circle icon. And birthdays have the present.

It unnecessarly uses space we need for good reading/access and less populated. The events displayed on the calendar itself remain narrower and barely can be read. Pls eliminate that!!!
No one participating here in this forum can change anything. You can let Apple know your thoughts here:

Please consider submitting feedback per IdrisSeabright’s suggestion and link above. That is the only way to get Apple to listen and potentially take action based on user input. Thank you.

THIS!!!!! This is horrible for me!!! I use my calendar for all kinds of things and not having a visible second field to show in the month view is horrible!!! Why would they take a feature like that away?! I pray they fix this in future updates because needing to click every event to see the location field notes is driving me crazy!!!

Meanwhile, there are hundreds, probably even thousands of other calendar apps available.

Count me as one more longtime fan of Macs who'd really love the option to turn off the icons added by Sequoia to the beginnings of all-day events. It's a visual distraction and a waste, at least as far as my workflow is concerned, of screen real estate.

Let people who like the icons use them, and let people who don't like them turn them off!

Or use a different calendar app.

I agree! I hate this symbol! I don’t need a calendar symbol to tell me I’m on my calendar. It takes up valuable space. I also despise that the font or symbols are larger now so less of what I enter on the calendar is visible. I think it’s at least four less characters are visible now. I really hope they will fix this or at least give the option to turn off that egregious calendar symbol! I’ve never complained before not even when an update long ago took one of the calendar lines away. It used to give you five lines per box on your monthly view of calendar. For years now it’s been downsized to four which I didn’t like, but this is just beyond awful!

There are numerous examples that show they do. For example, last year when they change the way you select watch faces, there was a concerted feedback campaign. Apple changed it within a couple of months (maybe less).

Apple doesn't read here so complaining here, while perhaps cathartic, is unlikely to effect any real change.

That is the way Apple has always been.

Yes, what "genius" did this? Bonus points for design over practicality...daahh

That's a matter of opinion. Yours is different than Apple's.

why not make it possible to turn it on of off in calendar preferences?

Because Apple generally doesn't do that. You can let Apple know your thoughts on the matter here:

I to absolutely hate the ISO 28 calendar update. First time in 25 years I must find another calendar this is nuts.

Well, I’ve never liked the built in calendar, so I’ve been using WeekCalendar for - YES - 25 years. I had it on my Palm Pilot, then my Palm Treo, and then in 2007 I moved with it to the iPhone. My calendar's first entry actually goes back to 1997, when WeekCal imported it from the Palm built-in calendar.
