MacBook Pro failing to connect to external screen`

13 inch, 2017 MacBook Pro, MacOS 13.6.9 (22G830)

Suddenly stopped communicating with my external screen, via old fashioned D-SUB cable (tried HDMI but failed, long time ago). Now the D-SUB cable connection seems to have lost sufficient power to keep the screen alive.

I've re-booted, no change.

Is my MacBook on its last legs?

Cheers,

John

Turns out, the problem was a broken charger. I've replaced the charger and also installed a USB-C to HDMI cable replacing the VGA cable. All working fine, charger + cable + $160AUD, rather than a new computer!

Cheers,

John

that appears to be a 1920 by 1280 display with

Signal Input:

  • VGA (Analog )
  • HDMI (digital, HDCP)
  • DisplayPort 1.2

Analog VGA uses a D-shaped three-row SUBminiature 15-pin connector, so the one labeled D-SUB is unambiguously VGA

When they dropped HDMI port, they introduced USB-C ports. Most HDMI adapters should work, but reliable ones like the Apple adapter are PRICEY, US$70. The cable required can't be any old dusty cable from behind the TV set -- it needs to be a certified Premium cable for this use.

There does not appear to be a DVI - that appears to be a [full size] DisplayPort connector, and your best bet for success. USB-C to DisplayPort adapter/cables are readily available for cheap and not much trouble (below about 4K resolution where things start to get dicey).

  • The cable is, I discover by looking up the adaptor (Apple USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter), is VGA. My external screen is a Philips 273V, about 4 years old, purchased on the advice of a friend who uses his in his music studio. Why it is labelled D-SUB on the back of the screen I've no idea. It also has a DVI-D (digital, HDCP) input but I couldn't find an adaptor to suit that one. The HDMI adaptor and cable failed, ie, the computer could not get the screen to work, as you say, it seems dodgy.

By the way, I had to replace the computer's battery, an Apple replacement, a few years ago, and now it sometimes fails to recharge when plugged in. Maybe this is another symptom of a failing MacBook.
