sequoia notification center not working on 2019 Intel iMac

After upgrading to Sequoia, I've noticed my desktop widgets being flaky. At first they were there, then they simply disappeared. I've noticed that I can't click on the time to get the Notification Center to come up and that the Notification Center process isn't running. I've tried to start it with launchctl , but I get Input/Output errors. Anyone else seeing this?

Navigate to
`~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.UserNotifications/Library/UserNotifications/Remote/default`

There delete everything inside... I didn't have to restart the computer but you might have to.

This solved the problem for me too! I also did not need to restart.

To do this in Terminal I had to first grant "Full Disk Access" to Terminal app in System Settings -> Privacy & Security.

Note that you don't actually need to reinstall the entire computer. It's not a "system" thing, it's a "user" level bug. If you create a new account from System Settings -> Users & Groups, then just log in as that user, the problem doesn't exist.

I ended up just creating a new user (with administrator permissions), logging out of iCloud on my "old" user, then logging in to my "new" user and logging back in to iCloud, and finally deleted my old user account from the computer and selected the "back up to disk image" so I could still access any files from my old user.

Of course it was a huge pain to deal with, and this bug is super annoying, but it was better than redoing the entire computer.

ok, for those following along.

I have a MBP 2019 i9. I have backed up and completely reinstalled my Mac after discovering some disk errors doing a first aid. Since the reinstall everything seems to be working as it should. I haven't connected up my Phone yet, but notifications are working fine again. As well as some other apps that were "beach balling" on me.

Your milage may vary, but, at this point I would recommend backing up, completely wiping the drive and then reinstalling from scratch. Don't do a restore as anything that might have been corrupted could be restored in a corrupted state.

Have not seen this issue.

Have you shut down and rebooted more than once since your upgrade...

A SafeBoot Use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Does a quick disk repair before it fully boots up, and certain system caches get cleared and rebuilt, third party system modifications and system accelerations are disabled temporarily.

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

I figured out that the issue with notifications occurs when using the mirroring option with an external monitor. If I switch to the extended display option, notifications work. However, as soon as I switch back to mirroring, the notifications stop working. If I use the laptop without an external monitor, notifications work fine. I tested this with my colleague’s MacBook Pro, and the behavior was the same.

I had this issue and found a solution so just wanted to leave it here for anybody that may stumble upon this.

It was terrible not to have any notifications! Also, if you installed any new apps and they request notifications they basically hang and eventually crash so this is a very painful bug.

Hope that helps

My notification center and notifications have come back for me but only after quitting the app Lunar which controls the screen brightness - I did this after somebody mentioned it was related to screen mirroring which I know Lunar leverages when you want to black out one of your monitors. I left the computer for 40 min and when I came back a bunch of notifications were prompting me. Hopefully this helps somebody. Still no Siri functionality for me.

I have tried:

  • Delete/reset the keychain
  • Check disk permissions
  • Boot in safe mode
  • Delete caches manually
  • Delete preferences and plists
  • Reset permissions prompts (`tccutil reset All`)
  • Killed processes
  • Rebooted repeatedly
  • Log out of iCloud and back in
  • Removed all login items

Reset launch services with `/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -seed -r /`

and still no luck. However, when I created a new user account on my Mac, that user's notifications panel (and the preferences pane for notifications in System Settings) opens fine, so it must be something inside of my user account, not something system-wide.

Even in Safe Mode, my user still cannot access anything related to widgets or notifications.

This is driving me nuts - not getting any alerts for work is so frustrating and at this point I've deleted and reset so many things that haven't helped that I just can't figure out what to try next, beyond just creating a new user on my Mac and moving stuff over and abandoning my current profile. I want to solve this, however, because it seems like there must be an explanation.

I do have Xcode and homebrew installed (which I've done `brew upgrade` and `brew services cleanup` and `brew cleanup` but that doesn't do anything either, so I actually somewhat doubt that it's related to a piece of software that we all have installed simply because the issue even happens in safe mode where nothing else starts or runs)

I am having almost the same issue on my 2018 MBP (i5, 16GB). For the most part, the widgets work perfectly and then once in a while they start to flicker, duplicate on top of one another, or disappear completely. I haven't been able to fix it. It does by itself after a couple days, but I will try the safe mode boot as recommended by @leroydouglas.

The order in which these widgets should be is: battery, weather, clock, screen time, dropover... Super annoying as I relied on these widgets quite a lot.

I am having the same issue after installing 15.0.1, albeit on an M2 Macbook Pro. No notifications appearing, desktop widgets don't appear, can't click the clock (or swipe) to open Notification Center, can't access the Notifications section of System Settings, can't Edit Widgets.

Have tried safe mode, rebooting, killing and restarting Notification Center, etc, with no luck. People on other social media sites are reporting the same issue occurring since the release of 15.0.0 but it just started today for me after installing 15.0.1
