How do you overcome Call Failed Error when using iPhone Mirroring - Not able to make phone calls

I was so excited about iPhone Mirroring in Mac OS Sequoia, because it is such a pain to switch headphones whenever you're switching in between. However, as it happens, every time I try to dial out on the phone, I get a "Call Failed" error like in the picture. No explanation. No help with troubleshooting.

I have tried all the remedies I have found on the web, including 1) Restarting both phone and Mac, 2) Resetting network settings 3) Ensuring that we are on the same wi-fi network 4) Ensuring that there is no more up-to-date versions of IOS, MacOS, or Carrier.

I am on a iMac M1 (2020) with a iPhone 12 Pro Max on AT&T in the United States.

Yes, Apple recognized this as a bug and fixed it with macOS Sequoia 15.0.1 (24A348) on 10/05/2024. Update to this version release to fix.

Now I think it isn't an issue with in my case, a 2020 Macbook Air M1, not having the T2 chip or Apple having posted wrong information about having either that chip or Apple Silicon, the latter which my M1 has. I think it's because I have ATT Prepaid, not their "regular" service. I remembered I get the same Call Failed when I try to call from my Air's contacts page even though it's calling via the iphone with Continuity. When I've tried to do that in the past I have received a notice that the cellular provider I've gotten the same message. ATT has "NumberSync" for Apple devices and says ATT Prepaid is not eligible. I can text with the new i0S 18 mirroring, but I can do that anyway on the laptop. I can mirror the iPhone to manipulate the phone settings on my Macbook Air, which will be useful. And I can call with Facetime. But mirrored cell calls from the laptop would require me to upgrade the service to 5G, which I just didn't need. May be time to search for another plan/deal or carrier and upgrade from the iPhone 12, although I don't even use it much anyway.

ATT has NumberSync; ATT Prepaid, which I have, does not. Thus, I cannot make a phone call on my Mac using the phone link from my Contacts list and get the same "Call Failed". NumberSync is on top of continuity, which lets me answer calls on my Mac and send and receive texts and make FaceTime calls. NumberSync is a service that has to be added to the ATT Prepaid 4G service I have for $20/mo., which takes the cost to what regular ATT 5G service costs. I suspect the iPhone Mirroring has the same restriction. I can Mirror the phone for purposes except for dialing calls. So I think people having this Call Failed issue need to check their cell phone plans. I'm not convinced this is an Apple software issue.

to be proactive you can file a bug report /submit your Apple Feedback here: Product Feedback - Apple

or wait for some iOS 18 point update to sort through the current issues.

I have the same problem with a 2020 M1 Macbook Air and iPhone 12. Not sure if this is the problem but your computer either has to have Apple Silicon or the T2 Security Chip. It's different supposedly for the iMac vs. the Macbook Air. For Macbook Air the system requirements state you can have the T2 security chip, which was Intel, OR Apple Silicon, which the M1 Air does. For iMac yours is supposed to work if it is either Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020 and iMac Pro. To have Apple Silicon the iMac has to be a 2021 or later model. I presume this is my problem with my Macbook Air M1 2020 although it is possible Apple got it's "OR" or it's "excluding 2020 M1" for the Macbook Air wrong in writing down the System Requirements. You can check for the chip in System Requirements. I may just have to call them or keep trying different things.

@Rustplane, I have the 2021 M1 iMac and also a M1 Pro 2021 Macbook Pro, so both with Apple Silicon. I have now installed Sequoia on both of them, and iPhone mirroring does not work on either of them. My plan is an AT&T regular subscription, not prepaid. I have 5g service.

I will soon be getting an iPhone 16, so we'll see if it works then... unless anybody from Apple would care to weigh in on whether it is supported.

This has nothing to do with the carrier. The carrier has not changed, it's the same carrier. Only Apple Mac and iOS have changed. I wish these new versions of Apple software would go through user functionality testing. Whatever happened to the old days when companies would test the software rather than making users find the bugs.
