Shortcuts "Set Wallpaper" Action throws com.apple.extensionKit.errorDomain error 2

The "Set Wallpaper" action consistently throws an error on alternate runs on iOS 18.0 on an iPhone 12 Pro Max. The error seen is: "com.apple.extensionKit.errorDomain error 2"

Oddly, the error happens every other run of the shortcut. It can be tested with this example shortcut: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/509c725af4794b4e974994bae9b11a7c

To reproduce:

1. Install Shortcut

2. Open shortcut

3. Ensure a valid destination focus has been set for the wallpaper

4. Run shortcut

5. Choose any image to use as a wallpaper

6. Allow the shortcut to complete

Expected result:

Wallpaper is set to home screen, no error is seen, shortcut completes

Actual result:

Error “com.apple.extensionKit.errorDomain error 2” shows on alternate runs (I.e. 50% of the time). Wallpaper is not set, shortcut fails with above error.

I've raised feedback item FB15159428 for this already. A similar issue had been reported by another user in the past: Shortcuts keep’s erroring and unable to f… - Apple Community

I'm hoping if others can confirm this is a general issue under iOS 18, or suggest some workarounds should they exist.

Thanks!

So last 3 days been testing this issue on other devices

Note that all these devices mentioned were all running the shortcut & automation with no issues on iOS 17.7

Every device was cleanly installed with iOS 18.1

And results I am seeing is telling me this bug is very model specific !!

So on a iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 18.1 installed - working with NO issues - and then upgraded to iOS 18.1.1 - Shortcut still working with NO issues.

On a iPhone 12 Pro - iOS 18.1 installed and same error with shortcut- and later upgraded to iOS 18.1.1- shortcut issue is still present (com.apple.extensionKit.errorDomain error 2)

Clean installed version that will be released in Dec on iPhone 12 Pro and STILL the same error 2 !!

Ipad M1 - Bug still present on iPad OS 18.1 and 18.1.1

Looking like this Bug wont be fixed this year for the Ipad and 12 Pro and probably other iphone models !!

Have to say - Why is it working on the 15 Pro with IOS 18.1.1 and not other iPhones on iOS 18.1.1 ?? !!

So good news and bad news........

Good news is - the issue in question is now running on my device for last 2 and half days and not yet seen the error once (com.apple.extensionKit.errorDomain error 2)

Shortcut has probably completed succesfully well over 35+ times by now i think

And device is currently running latest public bulid of iOS 18.1 !!

But here is the bad news........

Had to totally wipe the device and rebuild from scratch.I didnt just reset the device and erase all content and settings

I reinstalled iOS completely via a PC

And then manually reconfigured all settings etc etc

If this current situation changes - ill post on here

Done exactly same on Ipad as above - but issue still remains on iPad OS 18.1

I recently updated my iPad Pro 3rd generation to iPadOS 18.1.1 and after that this issue hit me too. I use this shortcut command Set wallpaper for showing snooker points tens of times per day so this is very annoying indeed.

I sent Product Feedback some minutes ago but I supposed this is not a new issue.

As a workaround I have to an extra time Set wallpaper after setting points. It would be nice to have On Error handling available for shortcuts to automate this workaround but Apple doesn’t have that basic feature available.

Please keep on shooting so that the priority for solving this issue gets higher.

Hi everyone, this is not a fix but makes it usable. Go to screen time. Activate it. Go to see all app & website activity. Then scroll down to notifications and you should NOT see shortcuts. Go back up and toggle repeatedly between day and week about 10 times. This will activate shortcuts as an option below in notifications and you will be able to turn off notifications. The shortcut will continue not working every time, but at least it won’t be annoying. I saw it somewhere else but not here so just sharing.

This is the best substitution for a solution I've found. Weird they make it so hard to turn off shortcut notifications, and you can glitch your way to it.

If you have something setting your wallpaper with automation, you can just double the number of automation instances with a 1 minute delay, and now your automation will run and not notify you of the alternating failures.

I am too suffering from this issue.

Can tell you this bug has been present on my device since IOS 18.0 Beta 3 i think

Ipad IOS 18.0.1 also suffering with this bug.

Have sent Apple a bug report about it - But no reply from them yet

But great that they have replied to you and saying that a potential fix has been identified !!

So since this morning - the shortcut in question has been running far more succesfully.Shortcut has completed 34 times for me without error !!

But does eventually still get the error

But by the looks of it - someone is def working on this issue and has made changes for the better !!

Hoping this issue will be 100% fixed and working by early Dec
