Siri not working with CarPlay after iOS 18 Update

I upgraded to iOS 18 on my 13 Pro Max. So far all seems pretty good with the phone itself. However, when I connect to my 2019 Subaru Outback Siri does not work right. Siri works fine when not connected to CarPlay.

Here is the most obvious symptom. When the iPhone is connected to the Subaru with CarPlay, if I ask Siri to message, my daughter, her name will pop up on the car’s CarPlay screen and the little circular glow thing is there, but it does not take audible input.

It worked perfectly fine before the iOS upgrade. I find this a safety concern because I may want to respond or create a text message while driving without having to look at the phone or touch the phone.

Has anybody else seen this problem or suggest a fix for the problem? I did turn off the car unplugged the phone from the car and restart the car. At the same time, my rebooted my cell phone. That did not help.

Work Around on this: Independently I also saw it in one reply below.

Instead of saying, hey Siri text my daughter, which we know doesn’t work currently, I simply depress the microphone button on the steering wheel, and then I just say text my daughter. At that point all the prompts worked like normal and I could continue doing hands-free texting while driving.

That steering wheel microphone button is also good for any phone commands. I never really used it before until now and I’m finding it quite handy. Try it out!

I have a Subaru Ascent and also ran into the same problem with Siri NO longer working with iOS 18. However, there is an alternative, where you can still use Siri with CarPlay, but you have to press the activate Siri voice control button by just pressing and holding the voice control button on the lefthand side of the steering wheel on a 2019 Subaru Ascent. This does work. Once you release the button, Siri will respond to your request. At least it’s a work-around, until Apple releases a new software fix.

FIXED (for me at least)

While in your car and preferably not near other WiFi sources, Go to Settings-> WiFi. You should see a network name something like "Car-DEC6" or something similar. Apple Carplay is using both bluetooth and wifi network to work. For me, I was able to play music, see maps, etc.. but no Siri voice commands were working. I turned off the following settings and everything has started to work again. Note: I also completely removed my car from CarPlay on the phone and the phone from the Car's system. Then re-added the phone to my car for CarPlay. This didn't fix the issue but I did do this first before disabling the settings below which did fix this issue. It's worked for days now.

On the Wi-Fi network described above, click the blue i to access the details for that connection. Turn off the following settings:

  • Private Wi-Fi Address
  • Limit IP Address Tracking

Once I did this, Siri voice commands started working again.

I had this same issue after a recent IOS update. Several times, I deleted my phone from Carplay connections in my vehicle and "forgot" my vehicles' bluetooth on my phone to no avail...each time Siri did not perform as it had prior to the update, and was unresponsive to commands. Finally, I was making another attempt to correct this issue, and decided to "forget" the Carplay network from the Wifi choices on my phone. After that, I performed the two original steps of deleting my phone from Carplay and forgetting my vehicles' bluetooth on my phone. Once I went through the process of re-pairing my phone and Carplay, Siri worked as it had before. If you're not forgetting the Carplay Wifi network prior to re-pairing your phone, this may be the solution for you.

I resolved the issue. I deleted all Bluetooth connections to the Honda car removed the iPhone from CarPlay in settings for the vehicle then I did a factory data reset. Siri now responds to a voice command.

I had tried all the other remedies as posted by other users, but nothing worked to restore, activating Siri by voice. Pushing the voice activation on the steering wheel button did in vote Surrey however it wasn’t until I performed a factory data reset that it restored it.

I didn’t mind doing that even if it meant, I had to reset up my settings in CarPlay or whatever but I found that wasn’t necessary after the factory data reset.

By the way, I have a Honda 2024 accord

Since some of the replies here have been from fellow Subaru owners I just wanted to mention that I was having the same issue of Siri not giving voice replies over CarPlay (2023 Forester Sport), but after updating my car’s head unit / console firmware (by connecting it to my iPhone’s hotspot), Siri’s voice replies started working again.

There’s always a risk of bricking your car’s head unit with software updates though, so recommend doing it when your nearest Subaru dealer’s service dept is open, just in case

This doesn’t resolve the issue. I have a 2019 Subaru Forester sport with the infotainment center up-to-date. If you remove it and re-add it, it works. For me though, 7 hours later when I left work it wasn’t working again. For me, this was not an issue until the iOS 18.1 update. We need this resolved ASAP. It’s dangerous with how Siri is not audibly responding. For those of us who do use it responsibly and not in a distracted manner…this absolutely now causes distractions. If this is an iOS CarPlay issue, please fix it. If it’s Subaru, please let them know and partner with them on an update.

I can confirm holding down the speak button on the steering wheel has Siri working properly. This is the only work-around I’ve found that works until a fix is issued.

Having the same issue with my iPhone 13 paired with a 2021 Forrester.

i think it’s a Hey Siri / Bluetooth/ IOS 18 / CarPlay issue. Bluetooth /IOS 18 works, so does it work when I use the steering wheel controls with Bluetooth / IOS 18 / CarPlay, but have never ever ever used the steering wheel controls until today

Tried re-paired my phone to the car and same thing
