Siri not working with CarPlay after iOS 18 Update

I upgraded to iOS 18 on my 13 Pro Max. So far all seems pretty good with the phone itself. However, when I connect to my 2019 Subaru Outback Siri does not work right. Siri works fine when not connected to CarPlay.

Here is the most obvious symptom. When the iPhone is connected to the Subaru with CarPlay, if I ask Siri to message, my daughter, her name will pop up on the car’s CarPlay screen and the little circular glow thing is there, but it does not take audible input.

It worked perfectly fine before the iOS upgrade. I find this a safety concern because I may want to respond or create a text message while driving without having to look at the phone or touch the phone.

Has anybody else seen this problem or suggest a fix for the problem? I did turn off the car unplugged the phone from the car and restart the car. At the same time, my rebooted my cell phone. That did not help.

Since loading iOS 18, CarPlay in my 2023 Subaru Forester has not worked. Keep getting the Subaru screen to disconnect, wait, and reconnect. After doing this cycle about a dozen times, CarPlay still does not appear.

Tried different USB-C to USB-A cables with my iPhone 15 Pro, and the same Subaru screen appears . . . Disconnect, wait, and reconnect. Not thinking its the cables.

Even went thru the ‘forget this car’ by removing the car from my iPhone to no avail. After removing the phone, and when the car does appear to connect, it does give the screen on my phone about accessing CarPlay while phone is unlocked . . . But the disconnect, wait, and reconnect Subaru screen appears shortly thereafter. This tells me that it wants to connect and engage CarPlay; but something is still not allowing it to engage.

Also went into the Screentime settings to ensure CarPlay was checked to be an allowed app in the content and privacy restrictions. Still, the same disconnect, wait, and reconnect Subaru screen appears.

It seems there is something in the new iOS that is not allowing Subaru’s infotainment system to fully engage CarPlay. Please help!

Interesting to know that you were not using the steering wheel controls for handsfree operations in your vehicle. Never occurred to me that users with steering wheel controls weren’t using them. Seems like if you were using Hey Siri before while in the car you may have been technically it using CarPlay for those functions and were instead using Bluetooth with the phone treating the car speakers like a bluetooth headset (which technically is what people that don’t have CarPlay in their vehicles but can pair their phone via Bluetooth would do). Nothing wrong with that of course but just surprised

This doesn’t resolve the issue. I have a 2019 Subaru Forester sport with the infotainment center up-to-date. If you remove it and re-add it, it works. For me though, 7 hours later when I left work it wasn’t working again. For me, this was not an issue until the iOS 18.1 update. We need this resolved ASAP. It’s dangerous with how Siri is not audibly responding. For those of us who do use it responsibly and not in a distracted manner…this absolutely now causes distractions. If this is an iOS CarPlay issue, please fix it. If it’s Subaru, please let them know and partner with them on an update.

I can confirm holding down the speak button on the steering wheel has Siri working properly. This is the only work-around I’ve found that works until a fix is issued.

Try this. Instead of saying, hey Siri text my daughter, which we know doesn’t work currently, I simply depress the microphone button on the steering wheel, and then I just say text my daughter. At that point all the prompts worked like normal and I could continue doing hands-free texting while driving.

That steering wheel microphone button is also good for any phone commands. I never really used it before until now and I’m finding it quite handy. Try it out!

I am having the same issue with Siri in Car Play as everyone else. I spent 2 hours on the phone with Apple trying to resolve the problem with no solution available. I, too, did a reset on my phone and the issue is still not fixed. I removed the car from Car Play and added it back. Still no luck. It doesn't work with the steering wheel microphone button either. It's frustrating and inconvenient. Hoping Apple will find a solution to this issue pronto!

FIXED (for me at least)

While in your car and preferably not near other WiFi sources, Go to Settings-> WiFi. You should see a network name something like "Car-DEC6" or something similar. Apple Carplay is using both bluetooth and wifi network to work. For me, I was able to play music, see maps, etc.. but no Siri voice commands were working. I turned off the following settings and everything has started to work again. Note: I also completely removed my car from CarPlay on the phone and the phone from the Car's system. Then re-added the phone to my car for CarPlay. This didn't fix the issue but I did do this first before disabling the settings below which did fix this issue. It's worked for days now.

On the Wi-Fi network described above, click the blue i to access the details for that connection. Turn off the following settings:

  • Private Wi-Fi Address
  • Limit IP Address Tracking

Once I did this, Siri voice commands started working again.
