Siri not working with CarPlay after iOS 18 Update

I upgraded to iOS 18 on my 13 Pro Max. So far all seems pretty good with the phone itself. However, when I connect to my 2019 Subaru Outback Siri does not work right. Siri works fine when not connected to CarPlay.

Here is the most obvious symptom. When the iPhone is connected to the Subaru with CarPlay, if I ask Siri to message, my daughter, her name will pop up on the car’s CarPlay screen and the little circular glow thing is there, but it does not take audible input.

It worked perfectly fine before the iOS upgrade. I find this a safety concern because I may want to respond or create a text message while driving without having to look at the phone or touch the phone.

Has anybody else seen this problem or suggest a fix for the problem? I did turn off the car unplugged the phone from the car and restart the car. At the same time, my rebooted my cell phone. That did not help.

Work Around on this: Independently I also saw it in one reply below.

Instead of saying, hey Siri text my daughter, which we know doesn’t work currently, I simply depress the microphone button on the steering wheel, and then I just say text my daughter. At that point all the prompts worked like normal and I could continue doing hands-free texting while driving.

That steering wheel microphone button is also good for any phone commands. I never really used it before until now and I’m finding it quite handy. Try it out!

iPhone 11, iOS 18, Subaru Forester 2023. Same problem. Siri can't speak.

If I ask Siri something when connected to CarPlay, the Siri globe shows up, but Siri doesn't reply by voice.

Google Maps navigation works fine in that directions are spoken, but Siri is clearly broken after the iOS 18 update.

Disconnecting from CarPlay makes Siri function just fine. So it's a Siri + CarPlay + iOS 18 problem.

I have the same problem on my Honda Accord 2024 after updating to iOS 18 and 18.1 I did try resetting the infotainment system which I had to do a few times for other things. That seemed ro fix it temporarily where “hey Siri” “Siri” worked. But a little while later it stops working again. I can push a name on the screen to send a text and that seems to work with Siri. Another issue though I extended the time, sometimes I have to talk super fast if I don’t or take a 1/2 a second pause it thinks I’m done and gets ready to send. I know this is two separate issues but both popping up with the new iOS update.

I don't see anyone with a (maybe newer) Minicooper responding, so I'll say that that brand is also subject to this Siri issue of the system not vocally hearing "Hey Siri" and responding with "Hmmm" or something in CarPlay mode. You have to push the mic button for three seconds, and even that is dicey.

Although it is intermittent...it's super annoying...

Similar problems after iOS 18 upgrade. 2022 VW ID.4 and iPhone 15 Pro Max, connected wirelessly to CarPlay. When Siri activates from the car system, for example to read a text message, the system freezes for about 30 seconds and then CarPlay disconnects and eventually automatically reconnects. When I try to use voice to text directly on the phone it also freezes and then CarPlay disconnects. Forgetting both sides, restarting and reconnecting doesn’t help. This makes CarPlay 100% unusable, I have to drive with the phone disconnected. No VPN. Voice Control and Vocal Shortcuts not enabled.

Same issue, 2021 Subaru Crosstrek. So it works if you hold the talk button on the steering wheel or you push and hold the square at the bottom left of the screen. The "hey siri" feature doesn't voice respond back but siri does do what I ask just doesn't say anything. Example "Hey Siri, play spotify." She'll play Spotify but not tell me she's doing it. The biggest annoyance with this is talk texting because you can't review what is sending or when you need to hear what she's saying back to you such as confirming a reminder.

18.0.1 did not fix this, Apple please make sure 18.0.2 fixes this issue. Superrrr annoying!!!

So let’s try this again. My last post was removed, even though it contained GOOD NEWS?!

In regards to your workaround, people shouldn’t have to limit their privacy or change anything in order for CarPlay to fix. I’d have to try it to be safe, but for now the speaker button on the steering wheel is fine for now.

The next major update includes a fix. I’m testing out the first public release and Siri is working fine. I do not recommend trying it out unless you’re okay with any bugs, which I thankfully haven’t run into as of yet.

Please don’t remove this post Apple as that’s just plain censorship and I’m trying to help people out here by spreading the good news…
