Video Playback on iOS 18 is Broken - Video size is small and timeline ends early when setting video to full frame or zooming in. Serious bug.

Video Playback on iOS 18. I use video playback to show slow-motion video frame by frame to my students and the video can only be shown at like 3/5 of the screen size (just like Apple fouled up screenshot editing about a year ago)

If you try to view video in the full screen you can’t scrub through and see time stamps or play frame by frame sliding left to right. It’s absolutely ridiculous. 2 out of 3x the video timeline finishes fully right and I haven’t watched the full clip.

Here’s a video showing the issue how at the small default size I can see the entire timeline and play the full video from beginning to end, but when I go to full screen and/or zoom in or move the screen around the timeline doesn’t work and you can’t scroll through the full video!

Need the video to not condense in size on the screen and play the full height / width of the screen. Also not have the text of the location showing above the screen. Way too much clutter. The reduced size of the video for editing issue started with photos several updates ago

Just updated to 18.1

and the video zoomed in scrolling bug is still there for me. iPhone 14 Pro. When zoomed in the scrubber / scroller / player doesn’t allow me to view the the full duration of the video. As well, the videos still open in a small window, the heinous playback scrubber is still overlayed and the thumbnail preview still isn’t there. Great job continuing to ruin the user experience Apple!

They ruined Photos and Videos. Playing a video is so tedious and unintuitive now. It opens in a small window and you can’t play a video frame by frame or by dragging it slowly while in full screen. The scroll bar is vague and doesn’t give insight into what time or duration of the video you’re at and there is no thumbnail preview at the bottom. All in all iOS 18 is a downgrade. Virtually everything they did was backwards and makes the UX cringeworthy, time consuming, and limiting. I really hope someone is listening and fixes this in 18.2.

but listen to what people are trying to communicate

I can hear what people are saying clear as a bell, but what's the point of that? I don't work for Apple, I'm just a user like yourself and the best way to communicate with Apple is via the Feedback mechanism. As I said earlier in this thread Apple do promise to read everything posted there, they don't promise to read anything here.

Your topic was my exact first thoughts when I discovered this about video scrubbing / default crop size of photos and videos now. I also scoured the internet looking for answers and other people with similar issues. Spot on, mate. I’ve submitted my feedback to Apple. I hope that enough people do it so that they listen to us and change it. It’s almost impossible to use videos now for any type of educational/ instructional content. They’ve taken away all ability for it to function correctly .

I hate the new interface for editing or even just trying to play a video, it’s so difficult for me to control that slide bar now, it’s too small and my hand shakes too much, I like to review videos from my dash cam, and it’s making it impossible.

I don’t know who thought minimizing everything was a good idea, and if I zoom in on the video while I’m scrolling through it, I have to close the video and reopen it because I lose the ability to scroll when I zoom out, they need to give the option revert to the old interface

ios 18 screwed up a lot of issues. Has everyone noticed that APPLE has not chimed in and offered any support. Nor have they acknowledged the many issues. Where is APPLE SUPPORT? >>> iPhone 14 ios 18 videos no longer transfer with properties nor thumbnail. We have hundreds of iPhone videos, all with properties and thumbnails. But starting around late Sept and early Oct. all videos transferred to our various computers W10/11, no longer have properties nor thumbnail images. They do all play however. We have hundreds of iPhone videos transferred to our computers over many years. All have properties and thumbnail images. Now, the videos have neither. Wondering if the last ios 18 updates did something to videos.

Getting a little carried away there platypus 🦆 lol.

Making it like they are some sort of savior and we are spewing hateful rhetoric. Get real.

Yes, as I’ve (already) mentioned, in 18.2 they partially “fix” the video going smaller during any sort of seeking/pause. However they have still abandoned the thumbnail scrubber at the bottom.

Enough of the distorted fanboy stuff and realize they did no one favors but allowing all users to deal with this for months. Tinkering with things for the heck of it is not prudent for any company. I hope a bunch of people did indeed already switch to Samsung.

I can’t believe more people aren’t talking about the IOS 18 video issues. It almost seems as if Apple is silencing commentators in the forum. Anyway it seems in 18.2 SOME issues have been fixed but there still is not a scrubber at the bottom and also if you zoom into videos and try to play them frame by frame it sometimes only plays approximately 1 second of the video or freezes. It’s been buggy since 18.0. Can Apple simply revert back to 17.0+ or dismantle their Apple Photos division and replace them with more logical employees who don’t mess things up for the sake of changing just to change?

The updated “Photos App” has ruined the use of video playback. I use video playback on my phone everyday for my work, analyzing high performance athletes. Because when you record video you cannot go from 0.5-7x zoom you use hi-res and pitch and zoom while dragging through video.

For what ever reason someone decided to remove this feature, yet keep the ability on IpadOS 18.2.1 does allow this? How can the developers make this kind of mistake?

i am thankful i do not need to tap the correct miniature thumbnail at the bottom to open it up in order to drag through the video so there has been improvements, but why is IOS unable to keep the video scrolling feature while zooming but my 3rd gen iPad Air on IpadOS18 can?

I have discussed this with hundred of clients who all hate this bug

Yup, and to add to that, the issue when zooming in where the video is only playing back a portion instead of allowing “sliding” the full video length is still broken. Meaning if you zoom in then you can only watch about a second or two of the video in that exact spot you zoomed in to! It’s ridiculous. So many bugs and backwards UI/UX “improvements”. Apple ticks me off.

Still after several updates from 18.0 to 18.3 I cannot view the entire video after zooming in on a slow mo video and playing it back.

It only plays a portion of the video. Ie if the video length is 7 seconds I can only see a 2-4 second portion of the video when scrolling left to right. The scroll bar ends to the right before the entire video plays.

This has been going on since 18.0 and I’ve reported it several times and Apple still hasn’t fixed it.

In addition the player is a joke and it should go back to the thumbnails at the bottom where you can quickly and easily slide back and forth and go to a specific spot. The player now is like a windows media player in 1999.

What happened to Apple?
