macOS Sequoia Massive memory leak

So this seems to be an issue with all the recent macOS versions, the windowserver process just seems to eat more and more ram. Now when im running a single safari window with 5 tabs, mail, messages, notes, and onenote, the windowserver process i guess needs 5gb of ram to do its job. I rebooted, it started at 250mb, as soon as i start opening things it skyrockets. It seems to eat about 1gb per app window open. Closing the apps does not lower the processes ram usage. It will continue to grow with every app i open. I did a fresh reinstall of the OS, reinstalled all 3rd party apps by hand, of which i only use a few, and the issue persists. These numbers hold true on my m3 MBA with 16gb ram and my partners m1 base MBA. This is ridiculous Apple

I found the Reason!

When the mouse passes over the top window special effect every time, Windowser would be larger and larger and won't be erased.

As you can see from cytan in this thread, their case was caused by a third party process that was launching on startup and once removed by using the suggested tools, the problem went away. You have not identified the cause to your problem, you have seen what happens when the third party add-ons in your System folders conflict with the OS.

Many users are experiencing similar issues....
Sometimes, resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) can help resolve memory issues...... To do this, shut down your Mac, then hold down the Shift + Control + Option keys along with the power button for about 10 seconds, then release everything and turn your Mac back on. Also, check for any software updates, as Apple often rolls out patches for these kinds of bugs.

Users who have experienced this issue had third party software installed that conflicted with the OS and once that was removed the problem went away. Doing a clean install and loading that same software back leaves the user in the exact same situation.

The instructions you provided to reset the SMC only works on an Intel Mac and does not pertain to any Mac that uses the M series chip. Creating a new user will only work if the third party software is installed on the User folder and that new user does not have that software that is causing the problem.

The way to determine what may be conflicting with the OS and causing the high RAM of Windowserver is to post the free EtreCheck report. For those that do not want to do that, then you are left with a Clean Install without restoring from a backup and not installing any third party software. It would be trial and error to install one at a time to identify which one is causing the problem. Those are the 2 options. The apps that are known to cause conflicts with the OS are:

  • Cleaners
  • Optimizers
  • AntiVirus
  • VPN
  • Display Managers - In some cases these just need updated for external display support or not needed at all.

Quote from @ Grant Bennet-Alder

" WindowServer is the task that makes sure the right stuff is in every window, manages multiple windows in multiple positions on the screen, possibly overlapping or not, and generally manages all issues related to drawing the stuff on the screen. " end quote

FYI - like both of my colleagues, running Sequoia 15.0 on 1 M1, 1 M2 and 1 M3 machines and I am not experiencing the WindowServer issue.

Not seeing that either. My Mac was rebooted 5 days ago after installing Sequoia and the Window Server process is not eating RAM. This is after opening and closing many tabs and having Mail open the entire time. I suspect as others have mentioned you may have an app the is running on startup that is causing the problem and can be identified using EtreCheck at the previous link. Very common to see this with Cleaners or Antivirus software on any MacOS version.

Hi BDAqua,

It's been 23 hours since the last reboot and my MacBook Pro hasn't crashed since. I think removing those two plists fixed my problem! It's just so weird that these two plists would cause the WindowServer to crash.

Thanks!

Same problem here. M3 mbp with macOS 15.0.1. Simply repeating switching from another app back to iphone mirroring make windowserver memory usage increase ~1GB. I had been enjoying iphone mirroring until I realized this. Really unfortunate. THIS NEEDS TO BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY!

I'm no expert so this pennyworth might not be worth a penny but it is how I understand it:

Random Access Memory is memory instantly available for open programmes to use so having 8gb RAM and not using it all could be said to be a waste. I don't think that using it fills up the machine's "installed memory" where your photos and documents and apps are stored and, when you switch an app off, the RAM it was using becomes available for other tasks. The newer apps use more RAM because they do more but when they are not used they don't occupy the RAM memory space. I paid £400 extra to double the RAM on this M1 machine to 16gb and the money will have been wasted if it is not needed. If we notice a performance problem due to high RAM usage it might be time to upgrade to a more modern machine. Multi-tasking with a lot of open apps is a great idea but can our brains really cope with all that?

HELP US APPLE!!!!!!

Apple is not here on these forums. We are just other regular users such as yourself.

Open an official support case with Apple. Apple cannot do anything unless they are made aware of the problem (assuming it is not due to some third party software that is installed). In order to fix a problem, Apple needs to know about it, and Apple needs to work with some users to figure it out such as needing to have the user submit some log reports & exact details on what triggers the problem.

In order for Apple to help you.....you need to help Apple. If you haven't opened an official support ticket for the issue, then you are just hoping & praying that by some miracle everything will be fixed. Do not assume anyone who has posted in this thread has actually contacted Apple directly to open an official support ticket for the issue. And if one person has done so, and they are the only one to do so, then Apple will think it is just a fluke with that person's system.

Even when Apple is made aware of a problem, it can take weeks or months before a fix is provided.

This happens on my MacBook Air M3 (16gb/512gb); it's related to external monitors (communities on reddit similarly report this). Using a Samsung QHD monitor without any software downloaded on my Mac. I try to unplug it and MacOS still allocates memory towards the external display (hence windowserver memory does not go back down to baseline). Definitely a MacOS issue that is only fixable by Apple.
