After updating to iOS 18, Photo App is not working on my iPhone 14 Pro

I upgraded my iPhone 14 Pro to OS 18. Everything seems to be working well except for the Photo App. My photos library is made up of folders with a year designation, and then albums from that year in the folder. When I tap a folder, it opens to the album list but then locks up. I've tried this with several different folders/albums and it locks up every time. I can use other features of the photo app, but it is now useless trying to look at albums. I've restarted the phone but no change. After the app locks up, I close it and when I reopen it, it opens to a black screen and takes a few sections to actually get into the app. I've not seen this issue yet addressed online and and wondering if it's a bug.

Hi guys

I encountered the same issue, although mine started over a week after updating to version 18. I tried restarting my phone, resetting network settings, and even resetting all settings, but nothing seemed to work. Eventually, I reached out to Apple Support, and they were able to help me fix it!

Here’s what worked: I changed my region from the United Kingdom to the United States, opened the Photos app, and it started working again! After that, I switched the region back to the UK, and it continued to work just fine.

Additionally, I had four languages set up on my phone, and the support agent advised me to temporarily remove them, which may have contributed to the solution as well.

I hope this helps anyone facing the same problem!

Dear people,

The solution given by rtvman is the best temporary solution to my problem.

1. Open the Photo app

2. Click on the heading Albums >, so not directly on one of the albums

3. A Header appears with the buttons: Personal - Shared - Activity

4. I can now scroll freely through the list of albums

If you click directly on one of the albums in 2. it goes wrong.

I wish you good luck

Tried the forced restart and thought it may have fixed it but after browsing through a few folders then albums, it locked up again. My phone has 256 GB capacity and I'm only using 86 GB of that. I don't know how to check memory (as in RAM?). As I mentioned in my update, I can access all folders and albums if I tap on the albums icon as opposed to scrolling through the folders themselves below that on screen button. Good news is I can access taping albums first so at least that works. Not sure why I can't tap on the individual folder icons. The folders open and I see the albums listed, but that's when the phone locks up.

Based on the posts, it looks like there are assorted problems with Photos, but specifically for the "Albums" issue, I think the above update is correct. In Photos, if you've set up Albums, you see them below "Recent Days." Within the Albums section appears to be a set of thumbnails for each album. Clicking on the thumbnail to see the photos in the album may or may not work. But if you click on the word "Albums" (it has an arrow next to it), it should bring up each Album in a list format. Then you can click within each album and see its photos.

If it were a bug, then we'd all be seeing this and, as you say, you've "not seen this issue yet addressed."

Have you tried a forced restart?

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

System crashes are often caused by memory issues. How much memory do you have, and how much of your storage is being used and how much remains free?

I have a 14 Plus, 100/128 gb used, on iOS 18.0.1. Pressing the App icon launches and immediately crashes the app. I can't even force close it it's just not running. Force restarting my phone didn't help. Can long press on the app to access certain folders like "Recent" but the moment I try to view the main app page it crashes. Had zero issues before updating to iOS18.

I'm not in a good location to perform a total phone reset but guess I'll try when I am if the problem still persists.

An Apple Genius support agent advised me that this is likely a problem with my iPhone 14 Pro Max and took me through process to attempt to fix. Required 1. do full backup of everything to icloud. 2. download iTunes on PC. 3. use cable to do hard reset/restore of iPhone via iTunes. So after several hours doing all this and the anxiety of possibly losing everything on my iPhone, I got my iPhone restored. But Photos app was still not working correct. Same issues. Apple agent said that every iOS release has some issues and iOS 18 wasn't perfect but refused to accept that Photos app wasn't working due to iOS18 upgrade. I highlighted the large number of people on this forum with the same issue and they just said iOS 18 isn't perfect. Does Apple have any representatives read this forum? If so, please please get this fixed. It is a core part of the iPhone experience and it has been great for many years. But if it doesn't get fixed soon, I'm jumping to Samsung and will never buy another iPhone.
