After updating to iOS 18, Photo App is not working on my iPhone 14 Pro

I upgraded my iPhone 14 Pro to OS 18. Everything seems to be working well except for the Photo App. My photos library is made up of folders with a year designation, and then albums from that year in the folder. When I tap a folder, it opens to the album list but then locks up. I've tried this with several different folders/albums and it locks up every time. I can use other features of the photo app, but it is now useless trying to look at albums. I've restarted the phone but no change. After the app locks up, I close it and when I reopen it, it opens to a black screen and takes a few sections to actually get into the app. I've not seen this issue yet addressed online and and wondering if it's a bug.

mellah ~ That's unexpectedly high for an iPhone 12 Pro Max battery that could be four years old. Max capacity can decline by 1% / month, so I wonder how accurate that 93% is. Check which version of iOS you're running:

Settings > General > About > iOS Version

...and if it's not the current 18.1, update.

For anyone keeping score, my original issue with the Photos App is still present with 18.1. I have to use the albums button to get to the albums. If I click on any of the thumbnails the program freezes. There must be something going on with this app given all the responses to my original post. Apple is promoting the Photos App with IOS 18.1 talking about all the improvements. How about fixing some of the basic operation? This started for me with my iPhone 14 Pro, and has continued with my upgraded iPhone 16 Pro.

The new “features” added to the photo app could be causing these crashes?

I have an iPhone 12 mini, just updated to OS18. When I open Folders, I click an Album key photo and get a complete freeze of the Photo app. BUT not all Folders>Albums freeze.

Why, oh why, did Apple decide to add a Movie Button to the Photo app? Then to pre-select music from some performer whom I don’t know and never want to hear again. How do I turn off the Photo app > Movie > Music option?

Who asked Apple to start an auto slide show in the Photo app? At least this can be unseen by scrolling the photo array upwards, although one of the slides still freezes behind ala wallpaper.

Apple apps and programming is becoming more and more like Microsoft — which has always been an anathema to those in creative fields because the user has no autonomy. MS programs were preset so the user had to work very, very hard to override what MS had assumed the user would want.

Apple — less is more. Let the user opt-in to features, not be forced to opt-out or worse, have to undergo choices that we don’t want. Now that Jobs is gone, Apple is fast-becoming a user-enemy company. Please stop it. We need solid programming, not bells and whistles. Hire experienced, wise, common-sense, long-range thinkers and humanistic developers.

Jayne ~ There's another possibility: The long process of applying an iOS update to an old iPhone with a weak battery can be the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back." So...

Does your iPhone 12 mini still have its original battery?

And what's the Maximum Capacity % here?...

Jayne De Sesa wrote: "...my iPhone 12mini, is at 79% capacity (...) It does not say "you may experience photo app crashes in iPhone OS 18.1.1."

Jayne ~ It's unreasonable to expect it to say that, considering there are many apps that could crash due to that weak, aging battery. Apple suggests replacing it at around 80% max capacity to avoid a variety of possible issues, including app crashes.

I would guess that the ambitions of this app's director of programmers imagined that everyone wants bells and whistles. However, the programming is too complicated to function well. I would think that most want a more simplified app that functions as it should. We are only along for the ride, rather than being well-served by the competitive race for market share.
