How to swipe for different keyboard languages in iOS 18?

On a new iPhone 16, under Keyboards, when I click "Add a Language" the page that appears is blank (other than the heading Add a language).

My phone's primary language is set to French, but autocorrect changes everything I type in French to English words.

What if I want to type on an English keyboard and then on a German keyboard? Can’t you just quickly switch between them like before? Is that not possible anymore?

what is the benefits of a bilingual keyboard that does not have show all needed keys like öüä ?

It's totally possible. You can add German and English to your Keyboards list and remove the one called English & German and you have exactly that. Do you not see how to do this using the Edit button and Add New Keyboard?

Do you not see the popup menu with äöü when you press and hold a, o, or u on the English keyboard?

If you don't like that method, there is a place where you can make QWERTZ German the keyboard you see when you choose the bilingual keyboard called English & German, if you have kept that. Have you not found that?

I found how to make it happen:

After setting the 2 languages, you need to dive into “hardware keyboard.”

Mine was set in US for the languages I use, aka English and French.

I found the culprit.

I then set the French keyboard as AZERTY (instead of QWERTY as it was set).

I can switch between languages. It was driving me nuts!

Thanks for that info. But I think this discussion is about using Swipe (Slide to Type) on the screen keyboard.

Nonsense is exactly what I would call it. It has taken me a while to figure out how to get my tildes or accents with my Spanish words. Instead of being able to type é as in él, I kept getting [e. So muddling through these comments, which are about switching into many different keyboards, I was able to get my tildes back by going to GENERAL and then KEYBOARD. But then under KEYBOARD, besides having both Spanish and English keyboards installed, there is another tab labeled HARDWARE KEYBOARD, and both English and Spanish keyboards are enabled.

What a waste of time.

Since 18.1.1. down-loaded in ipad pro, I can't switch to a french keyboard. I've a monolingual french keyboard, but even when I switch to it I can't type French letters like: é, ç, à û, ê, etc. (I'm extremely unamused)

Can someone please describe a simple way to get that function back?

When you press and hold e, c, a, u, e, etc , do you not get a popup menu where you can choose the accented version you want? Also possible on the English keyboard.

since the ‘new’ language setting, English & French in my case, I cannot toggle between both..when clicking on the world icon, nothing happens and the keyboard is in English only.

-I deleted that ‘bilingual’ keyboard and tried to enter the languages separately and it does NOT work anymore…it automatically reverts to the ‘bilingual’ keyboard.

Cannot type in French anymore (unless I use the horrible on screen keyboard)..what a mess..

tried everything…there is English (US) and French (CSA?) enabled in the Hardware keyboard but I cannot switch to Azerty for the French as the options apply to both languages at a time…I am using the microphone icon in the meantime..seems to work…

It's not very clear from your posts what is wrong. Please post here exactly what you have on your list at settings > general > keyboard > keyboards, or a screen shot.

If you have a hardware keyboard and you want it to be azerty, you need to go to settings > general > keyboard > hardware keyboard and tap on French and make sure that French is checked (and not French CSA, which is qwerty used in Canada).

If you're using the Magic Keyboard with an iPad, you need to go into Settings and toggle off the emoji keyboard. Otherwise, when you hit the world button, you'll only get emojis and become super frustrated like I did.
