MacBook Pro M1 Pro keeps turning the startup sound on automatically

Hello Everyone,

I recently bought a refurbished MacBook Pro M1 Pro and for some reason I am unable to deactivate the startup sound on it. I have tried System Settings -> Audio -> Play sound on startup -> off but that doesn't help as the setting keeps turning itself back on and the startup sound is played every time the laptop wakes up from sleep or from a complete shutdown.

I have tried looking for an answer on the forum but unfortunately nothing worked for me.

I would really appreciate if someone can help me understand whether this is a software related issue or a hardware one .

Thanks a Lot !

Are you running any anti-virus apps, cleaning/optimizer apps, or third party security software? These types of apps all interfere with the normal operation of macOS and are not needed on a Mac.

You can try clearing the NVRAM using the following Terminal command (it is safe for M-series Macs) in case it is corrupt:

sudo nvram -c

This command will prompt you for your admin password. Nothing will appear on the screen while you type the password, so press the "Return" key to submit the password. Then restart the computer so that the system pulls the default NVRAM settings on the next boot. Then try resetting the System Settings "Sound" option to mute the startup chime.
