Google Drive CPU usage is high after upgrading to Sequoia

After upgrading my M1 iMac to Sequoia yesterday, I've been noticing that the CPU usage for Google Drive is constantly high (25 to 45%). Since none of the Google Drive folders are downloaded, this CPU usage in the past has always been very low--so low as to be almost unnoticeable.

There are a few posts on Reddit about this same issue.

The last Version 100.0.2.0 resolve this problem in my M1 pro.

I was having yhus CPU overconsumption issue for a while, and ir got resolved doing the update.

Just click in the Google Drive icon at the bar, and then select "More Options Menu" and then select "Help.

At the page, click in "Install and set up Drive for desktop for macOS",

Download and install the update without needing to uninstall the previous version, and that’s it!

After opening a case at the Google Drive Team 3 days ago and being in contact with them since, I got this answer from them:

Quote:

"We've been made aware of the issue you're facing with Drive for Desktop. We want to inform you that a workaround for this issue will be included in an upcoming version of the Drive for Desktop app.

We don't have a specific timeline for the release of this update at this time.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience."

Confirmed this happens even after a clean install (no Migration Assistant) on a brand new MacBook Pro M4 Pro. 54% CPU usage all the time, even after sync completed 24hours ago. Unplug monitor, CPU usage drops to near zero.

This has been plaguing me for months. I only just this thread. I'm shocked at how Google has reckless disdain for and actively gaslights users reading @ozsmacd comment at Nov 10, 2024 5:53 PM.

I contacted Google Drive support; they said they've made no changes and it must be an issue with the upgrade to Sequoia. (Well, yes, it did start when I upgraded to Sequoia.)

I also contacted Apple Support. They said it must be a case where the Apple operating system and the Google Drive application are "optimizing".

On my M1 iMac, the Google Drive process continues to be at the top of CPU usage on the Activity Monitor; it's currently at 35%. The next process is at 2 to 5%.
