Question about locked apps in iOS

I have an iPhone (iOS17) with Face ID.

Right now, if I launch my bank account app it logs in automatically with face ID. So: 1) tap to launch and 2) look in the camera to log in, right?

One of the new features in iOS18 is locked apps, what’s the point of that? How is it more secure? How is it any different than now?

In iOS18 I would tap in my “locked bank account app” and it will automatically open and log in with face id anyway: 1) tap, and 2) look in the camera to open it and log in.

Thanks!

iPhone 6s

For apps that have their own log-ins, then the ability to lock an app in iOS 18 doesn't really add anything. The point of the new "locked app" feature is to be able to restrict the use of apps that don't have their own security. For instance, you may not want someone to whom you hand the iPhone to be able to browse your photos. Before, there wasn't any way to keep them out of the Photos app. Now you can, by locking it. The same would apply to a game that you didn't want your child to be able to use if you hand them your iPhone to play some other game.
