Backing up iphone on computer with a small hard drive

I cannot sync my iPhone on my new computer. The process fails because there is not enough space to backup the iPhone.

I have a 118 GB drive, where most of the space is reserved for system files.

I do not, and will not do any cloud storage.

I do have an external hard drive with 4 terabytes of available storage.

Please note, this is not a request to relocate the backup file. I know how to copy and paste.

I cannot create the backup file.

I want to actually backup the phone (which apparently is MANDATED in order to access storage on my phone).

I don't want to use the C: drive. I refuse to do cloud. I want the sync operation to use the D: drive to back up the phone.

Is this impossible to do?

To my knowledge there is no easy, supported way to move where the backup is stored when made. There is some discussion about the issue and some suggestions in this Microsoft Community thread:

but the chances of mucking things up are pretty high. But unless someone else here knows of a way I haven't found, it's your only option other than finding a way to clear some extra space on your hard drive.

Regards.
