Connecting multiple displays to my MacBook Pro M3

I recently moved from Windows to Mac. I have two monitors that I use. My MacBook is supposed to support two monitors with the lid closed. I have an adapter that I use to connect my two displays, which I then plug into the Thunderbolt port on my MacBook.

First, both monitors are always identified as one by my MacBook and are mirrored. Second, when I close the lid, everything goes to sleep, even if I move the mouse. I tried connecting one monitor to the HDMI port and the other to the Thunderbolt port, but that also didn’t work; I only see one display. Additionally, when I close the lid, everything still shuts down. I also tried connecting the first display to the adapter, closing the lid, and then adding the second display, but that didn’t fix the problem either.

Can anyone please help me with this? Thanks!
