It’s bizarre. Some contacts retain their photos, others have been set (and reset) several times, then disappear. Contacts are backed up to iCloud FWIW. Running 18.1 IOS but problem also appeared on earlier OSs. Searched forum but do not see a reliable fix.

I figured this out: the photos that were disappearing were in a contact list stored with my ISP (Bell Canada). When I duplicated those contacts in Outlook, the photos remained in place and have done so for more than 24 hours. (Note, I did not need to remove the contact from my ISP’s contact list, just create one in Outlook).
