iOS 18, mail app no longer makes move to folder suggestion AGAIN…happened recently in iOS 17 as well

The most useful mail app feature again has been lost during the iOS upgrade. The ability for the mail app to auto suggest a move to folder for your emails. Now you have to either scroll to the folder where you want to move item to or do a search for the folder, which is time consuming especially if you get many similar emails that you want to move to a particular same folder each time.

please apple users contact support to get the engineers to fix their error yet again with this new iOS update.

This is happening on my iPad—18.0.1. It's frustrating. I was hopeful that after a weekend of manually moving messages, the application would learn. No go.

I cannot find documentation on how this "move suggestion" feature should work.

Apple Customer Support has NO DOCUMENTATION on the iOS or Mac OS feature. The Product Manager for Apple's Mail App needs to pay attention and support their own team.

If you are reading this and frustrated, first open an Apple Support Case. Second, post here with your support case number (mine is 102430691283). Third, send in Feedback (below).

Apple also invites submission of comments, bug reports, and feature requests via its Product Feedback portal. For iPad and iPadOS:

Engineers won't read your post here.

Apple support's article: Organize email in mailboxes on iPhone - Apple Support

Eg: says

Move emails to a mailbox

  1. Go to the Mail app on your iPhone.
  2. Do any of the following:
    • While viewing a Primary message: Tap , then choose a mailbox.
  • While viewing a category message list: Tap Select, then select the messages you want to move by tapping their checkboxes.
  • Tap Move at the bottom of the message list, then choose a mailbox.
  • Important: When you select messages in Transactions, Updates, or Promotions, you are
    • selecting all the messages in that category from the sender.
    • While viewing a sender’s digest view: Swipe left on a message, tap , tap Move Message, then choose a mailbox.

Recommendation:

  • Write a log of everything you are doing with Apple's Customer Support, put a version number on the document, update it after every call with customer support, and then upload it to the Apple Support Ticket.

This helps Apple's Customer Support Team. I've run large tech customer support teams in the past. Something is seriously broken between Apple's Product, Engineering, and Support Teams.

The fact that there is NO WAY for Apple Support to escalate through their management to force Engineering and Product to create documentation for a feature is a core leading indicator to this concern.

Doing a documented log of your journey, troubleshooting, and updates is helpful to Apple's Customer Support person and their ability to pass that information to Engineering (they cannot talk to the Product Manager).

Here is an example of a troubleshooting log in this case:

2024-10-21 - Apple Move Suggestion on iPad iOS 18 Broken - 10******3

Notice that I edit screenshots of product privacy information.

After the call, I update again. This helps the next call to Apple Customer Support.

So to everyone reading. I will send feedback at the apple feedback site…Product Feedback - Apple

Working with multiple tier 2 agents has resulted in absolutely nothing. They do not understand and the engineers if they even get the complaints seem not to care as well.

we need more of you to send feedback, signup for any updates and send feedback. Get tier 2 support personnel and start case.

the next issue is feedback does not even list the mail app for iOS but does list for it strangely for the Mac OS

we just need more people to feedback apple and try get tier support to open case

Excellent info and I have done the same. This happened a year ago after iOS 17 and was eventually fixed whether on purpose or fluke since it is happening again and the tier two support have no idea nor does the engineers I am sending screenshots and videos too…

This was the forum case from a year ago…

iOS 17 / PadOS 17 / Mail : no longer reme… - Apple Community

i did not update all my devices, just my iPad Pro 11

the other devices are on iOS 17.7 and the move to Smart Folder suggestion still works perfectly…

Christie, try an inform an apple senior tech advisor and start a case to get more Apple personnel working with their engineers to fix.

last year during the same issue with iOS 17, the forum had at least 50+ members that were telling apple to fix…this year seems less troubled or do not care to address.

so Christie I implore you to inform tech support.

thanks

Assuming you are using an inbox in Apple's "Mail" app:

If you haven't already: You might give Apple's 2024 method a try:

Move your email messages to a mailbox

  1. Go to your Inbox in Mail.
  2. Tap Edit in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select the email messages, then tap Move.
  4. Tap Move Message.
  5. Choose a mailbox to move the email messages to.

If this is not working for you: You may want to send feedback to reach those who work behind-the-scenes at Apple : See webpage :Product Feedback - Apple

I chatted with an Apple support person. At first he did not seem to understand the issue. Then he put me on hold for a while to check it out with someone else. When he returned he referred me to the new Grouping that is available now in Mail with the latest version, 18.4. But that feature does not cut it for the useful Move To feature with Suggestions and Memory for the best location to move to.

Does not sound to me like Apple will restore this useful feature!!

Barry…

wow very detailed I was on one of the threads from a year ago when iOS 17 broke the feature.

i thought they addressed it in several iOS 17 beta then fixed in 17.1 but now that was inadvertently fixed not a true address by these engineers just fixed I think in hindsight by pure serendipity.

as it happens now again with iOS 17 and the senior support techs just seem not to care to follow up with the issue or like you suggest that the engineers or product developers or give their support personnel no feedback.

i will keep trying but each time when my senior tech does not followup I end up basically starting all over
