Is there a way to customize Notifications for each Apple Device?

When I use my iPhone, I do not get notifications (for example from Discord) on my Apple Watch, but when I do not use my iPhone, notifications are routed to the watch. That’s expected. But here’s the issue:

When I use my iPad and have Discord open on it, each time I receive a message, a notification is sent to my watch regardless of having the app open on the iPad. Literally each time I talk with someone, I need to open Discord on my iPhone, and put it aside just to stop the notifications from coming to the watch, to then continue using Discord on the iPad with the convenience of having a physical keyboard.

It does not make sense, why can’t the notifications be stopped when I actively use the iPad (like they would be when using the iPhone)? What can I do about it? It’s really annoying…

Perhaps helpful:

iPad Air 11-inch (M2)

Apple Watch SE (2nd gen)

(Each device is running latest stable release.)

When you have an Apple Watch, Notifications work this way:

iPhone locked/watch locked - notifications go to iPhone

iPhone locked/watch unlocked - notifications go to watch

iPhone unlocked/watch unlocked - notifications go to iPhone.

So, you're seeing normal, expected behavior.

It does make sense. Your watch is not connected to your iPad. Your watch doesn't "know" when you're using the iPad and when you're not. It will continue to notify you or not notify you based on the state of the iPhone.

Your options are to unlock your phone or lock your watch (take it off and put it back on and don't enter the passcode).
