Auto-Correction is changing my words incorrectly after iOS 18 update on iPhone

I've been an iPhone user for 15 years and I've never had issues with the autocorrect like I've had since upgrading to iOS 18. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's been completely debilitating. I've literally had to resort to dictation because typing a simple message can take me 10 minutes.

Every word I type ending with 's' gets autocorrected wrong. For instance, "jobs" gets changed to "job a." Literally EVERY SINGLE word ending with 's' gets appended with an 'a' for no reason.

I used to type contractions without the apostrophe because I could always count on iOS to add it for me. Now it just changes "whats" to "what a", "wheres" to "where a", "whens" to "when a", etc. And sometimes it's even worse where things like "didnt" somehow become "did my."

Words that aren't incorrect are changed to ones that are:

"our" to "out"

"come" to "coke"

"some" to "dime"

"guy" to "but"

"wise" to "word"

"quicker" to "quick we"

"stronger" to "step get"

And other total chaos:

"ask" to "as k"

"about" to "a out"

"these" to "the we"

"into" to "i to"

"hello" to "**** i"

"today" to "to day"

"maybe" to "may be"

"anyway" to "any way"

"called" to "call ed"

And these are only a handful of examples I've noticed in the last half hour or so.

PLEASE APPLE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD FIX THIS!!!

@Smore95GAGA - TYSM! I just tried your suggestion of resetting the keyboard to its factory default, and so far it seems to be better!

Also, this may not have been totally necessary, but when I went checking other settings, I noticed that my system dictionaries included a whole bunch of other dictionaries that I don’t think I ever selected. So I deselected a bunch of them that I didn’t need, including English UK (I’m in US) and a series of other international versions that appear to be related to my multi-language keyboard selection but are in fact totally different. Makes me think that this issue may be exacerbated by having more than one language setup for the keyboard?

Reset keyboard:

(Thanks Smore95GAGA!)

Settings>General>Transfer or Reset iPhone>Reset>Reset Keyboard Dictionary

Clean up dictionaries:

Nope. I just checked this and with the exception of making iOS a little less nanny with curse words ... I've barely anything in that section. I'm still witnessing iOS change words like on to in and other assorted problems with autocorrect. It's making me sound like someone with learning disabilities ... unless I reread what I'm writing every time, multiple times. I would say autocorrect is broken AF.

I've already commented, but its so bad, i have 2 languages set for iphone and before iOS18, it was working ok for both, not mather what app I was using, but now, it doesnt even correct to a speficif word, it can be just gibberish, as if their AI is still learning. With the keyboard hitbox being small, before I didnt take long to type with autocorrect working, now is just annoying and frustrating sending a message.

It is very frustrating! I cannot type shot. I have to copy and paste the word “shot”! I get “short, shoot, shote, *****, sh*t” but never shot. I can’t type “and”! I get Ana or and’s. The same thing goes for the word “to”. I can get “too” but not “to”.

Having to correct autocorrect is frustrating. Apple seems to be going backward with their keyboard. Being able to move the cursor is fine but it’s not fine when I can’t add on to a sentence without being forced to delete the word before it or fix autocorrect.

There’s a long list of keyboard quirks I encounter daily, too many to list. I agree with everyone else. Autocorrect is useless.

If Apple wants to put out the annual iOS update, rather than having suggested words wiggling, fix the keyboard! For the love of all things holy, put numbers on the screen with letters! How hard can that be. Those who are doing the coding for the iPhone’s keyboard might benefit from using some of the AI.

Apple has fallen far behind Samsung and Google and they can’t rest on their laurels forever. Before they throw in AI that doesn’t work, they need to fix what’s broken and leave everything else alone.

A perfect example of an upgrade becoming a downgrade is Apple’s native calendar with its rolling red calendar and grey dots. Their original calendar was good. Most iPhones users have 3rd party apps for email now but they shouldn’t have to with an iPhone. Apple desperately needs an upgrade its calendar of rolling grey dots.

Before anyone considers signing out of iCloud and setting it up as a new phone, don’t do it! It won’t fix the broken autocorrect. I tried and spent hours setting my phone up again. It was a gigantic waste of time.

I still see all the and’s, Ana, *****, sh*t, too………..so I hope I can warn people not to do a full reset.

This is a software glitch that Apple needs to address. With AppleCare and taxes, I’m up to

$1,500. I should be able to type without having to disable autocorrect. Perhaps Apple’s AI can be used to fix its own mess.

There are a lot of people who are experiencing this. If I get bored waiting for an Apple genius, I’ll talk to other people at the store and more often than not, there are a lot of iPhone owners who’ve told me they’re experiencing the same problem.

Hopefully, Apple will fix it, sooner than later.

This can’t be understated. I spend half my time correcting “autocorrect” since the 18 upgrade. I don’t know why I put up with it. Should probably just disable.

Just in this post:

“up” replaced by “I-“

”by” replaced by “be”

”with” replaced by “when”

”Can’t” replaced by “Can’ t”

”been” replaced by “even”

Can’t make this up. I’m running 18.1.1. Stories of a fix in 18.1 have been greatly exaggerated.

Same. Bilingual autocorrect is terrible. I usually have my iPhone set to Spanish but text in both English and Spanish. The new update is so bad it autocorrects literally every English word I type to Spanish. I set my iPhone back to English but that didn't solve it either. This wasn't even an issue before the update. I can't imagine how bad it is for people using drastically different language keyboards.

Ahhhh, but go to text replacement and nothing has changed. Yet autocorrect still does not work. It is quite literally a software issue for so many to be having the same problem. Also, went to the Apple Store and even they couldn’t figure it out. Told me to use a Mac and reset and restore my phone to TRY to fix the issue. Thanks. I don’t have a Mac. I have the phone, watch and iPad. Now I am being told only a Mac can POSSIBLY help.

I am so frustrated with the newest update. AutoCorrect is now impossible. I had to look up how to turn AutoCorrect off completely. It is wasting so much of my time. I dictate a lot. I do a lot of my work on my phone. And it is taking me almost twice as long to do my work on my phone now. I’m frustrated. Apple needs to go back and fix that. There’s no way that they’re getting it wrong to this extent. I’ll be typing words correctly. Correct words. And they are being changed to multiple words, random words, things that don’t make sense at all. And it’s almost every other word. I typed the word there, it changes it to the and the letter a. I typed something as simple as and, and it will change it to anteater. It’s the weirdest thing. The fact that something that has been so reliable for so long has now become impossible to use is making me reconsider. What kind of phone I’m getting next year. I don’t think I’ll be getting an iPhone. And it looks like I’m one of thousands and thousands of customers saying the same thing. Fix it. Now. It’s been almost 5 months. There’s no reason it should still be an issue. Fix it

I don’t see the point. It’s not like Apple will ever acknowledge wide spread bugs

Apple corrects bugs all the time. Why do you think they release updates? If they didn't fix bugs, you'd go from iOS 18 to iOS 19 without anything in between. There have already been six updates to iOS 18.

i posted here so that others can see that they’re not alone in their experience of various iOS 18 bugs.

With what you think are iOS bugs. Generally, in a thread this long, there are multiple issues going on that happen to look somewhat similar but which have different causes and solutions. In most cases, just posting "I have the same problem" is pointless.

AutoCorrect is not just unusable, is mostly inaccurate especially when using speech to text. It creates words that are not even in the dictionary. At least not common language words. This has been happening over the last 2 to 3 years. I used to rely 100% on speech to text for iMessage, especially or other chat apps. No longer.

I tried to replace the keyboard with Google’s, which would include Google speech to text, however, Apple doesn’t really allow you to replace that function cleanly. When using Google it has to go to another screen to capture it and then bringing it back as a pain in the butt.

if Apple is not going to fix it, then at least allow us to replace it with a third-party seamlessly.

it is truly amazing that with the increased accuracy of machine, learning and AI chat, bots, the Apple and Siri are decreasing exponentially in accuracy and usability.

apple. Please help!!!

BTW. Excuse some of my typos above and misplacement of commas, after all, I was using Apple‘s speech to text. I caught most of the problems, including sentence structure, however, not easy. 😕

Yeap, worse. It used to be that if a word in a text messaging thread had been used recently, Apple wouldn't try to correct it. Afaict, that's no longer the case. I had typed in 'blacktip reef shark' in a previous text, but when I tried to type 'reef' a few minutes later, it kept correcting it to 'reed' or 'red' or anything but what I had typed. And it keeps putting a red line under the name of my cat 'Lunk'--admittedly an odd name, but so is the cat. Lunk is now 22 years old, so Apple should have had time to learn his name.
