When you transfer or download Photos, Images, MP3s, PDFs, Books etc to your iPhone, where they end up depends on the apps you have installed that can handle them.

Think of it like this: Imagine you're receiving a package. If the package contains clothes, you'd take it to your closet. But if it's food, the kitchen is the better destination. MP3 files are like the package, and compatible apps are the designated storage areas on your iPhone.

AirDrop Example:

Let's say you're AirDropping one MP3 file. Here's what happens:

  1. Identifying the Right App: Your iPhone automatically checks for apps that can store and play MP3s. This might include the built-in Music app or third-party options like VLC or PlayerPro.
  2. Multiple Compatible Apps: If you have several compatible apps, like in the picture you mentioned, iPhone won't automatically choose one.
  3. Permission for Storage: In this case, iPhone will ask you for permission because it's not clear which app you prefer for the MP3s. The prompt (like the image shown below) will appear, letting you select the app where you want to store the files.
  4. Single Compatible App: If you only have one app, say WhatsApp (which can technically store audio files but isn't ideal for music), iPhone won't ask for permission. It will simply open WhatsApp and attempt to store the MP3s there. This might not be the best option for music playback, but it's the only app available.

Key Takeaway:

The storage location for MP3s depends on the apps you have and your choice when prompted. Having multiple compatible apps gives you more control over where your music gets stored.
