iPhone 16 Pro Battery Draining Quickly

Iphone 16 pro battery seems so poor. I unplugged my phone at 9:15 am and by 4pm it had only 32% with 3hrs of screen time. I did my 0.5gb update hoping it will extend baterry life and upgrade functionality of my iPhone.

How is it possible? Anyone experiencing bad battery life as well?

Here are a few insights from Apple Support’s official iPhone Battery Drain help page

Did you recently update your iPhone to a new version of iOS?

  • If you've recently updated your iPhone, battery life might drain faster than usual for a few days. Background tasks like indexing and syncing can temporarily affect performance, so give it time to stabilize.

Battery Suggestions

  • Auto-brightness: Enable auto-brightness to reduce battery usage.
  • Auto-lock: Activate auto-lock to prevent the screen from staying on unnecessarily.
  • Reduce Brightness: Lower your screen brightness if it's set too high.
  • Background Location: Limit location access for apps to "While in Use" to conserve power.

Battery Usage Overview

  • Check Activity & Battery Usage by App: Go to Settings > Battery to see which apps are using the most battery. Adjust settings for apps consuming excess power.

Other Battery Saving Tips

  • Use Wi-Fi: When possible, connect to Wi-Fi, as it consumes less battery than cellular data.
  • 5G Auto (iPhone 12 & later): Enable Smart Data mode to automatically switch between 5G and LTE to save power.
  • Low Power Mode: Activate this mode to reduce power consumption when the battery is low.

Battery Health

  • Check Battery Health: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see your battery’s condition. If "Service" appears, consider replacing the battery.

For the Lock Screen battery usage, review the Widgets you are using and remove any non standard widgets along with the ones you do not use.

How to add and edit widgets on your iPhone - Apple Support

Ironically you also have the known apps installed that have seen the poor battery performance in every post here:

  • Instagram
  • SmapChat
  • WhatsApp

I don't know anything about the tutti.ch app, but the others should be removed and then post the battery usage again. The goal here is to identify the cause of the problem and it obviously is not the device you are using and related to the installed apps. Instagram has been the most prolific problem with its recent updates that affect all devices and iOS versions with the Social Graph of your account being the the largest factor between users who may not see such a dramatic result in battery usage.

I have seen the Camera app using excessive battery, and an iOS update may be able to solve that one, but you have much more going on there. Remove those identified apps and widgets and post your battery usage again.

I did all of those things and it still doesn’t help. It is horrible to spend so much money on a phone and it not be able to hold a charge for a day when not even used that much.

Most users don't have to do any of those things. What has been found to consistently cause the problem is the Meta apps that they have installed. Meta has already confirmed a problem with their apps and reported that a recent update of them helps, but it clearly does not solve the problem with those apps. Uninstalling those apps does resolve the problem, which makes it an easy troubleshooting step and for that it will take a future update of those apps. The same issue has been reported on Android phones as well and are not specific to the iPhone 16.

As Jeff Donald said, post the screenshots as others have done to show your battery usage by apps over the last 24 hours.

Ok, I will make it simple. Remove any app from Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, etc) and compare your results. Meta has acknowledged that there apps have an issue with battery draining and affects all phones, including Android phones. They have attempted to resolve the problem, but it obviously has not been fixed. I highlighted the important points from the article below to save you the time of reading it.

  • Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps for iOS and Android devices consume a lot of battery life. Besides complaints from people worldwide, authorities and analysts conducted tests. They affirmed that both are battery hogs even when the apps aren't in use.
  • Facebook acknowledged this problem and partly fixed it. However, the solution doesn't seem to be satisfactory.
  • It is suspected that there are other problems related to the app running in the background.
  • A better option, performance-wise, is to uninstall the Facebook and Messenger apps and use a browser to access your Facebook account. It will work just like on your computer.

Backup up to a computer first as a safeguard, then test by restoring to Factory Settings using the computer. That will reload iOS where restoring from the device will not. I suspect you will return to all day battery life. Then your option is to restore your backup from your computer to get your data back and then delete all the third party apps. Continue to test as you go and adding the apps back one at a time. Some of the apps you identified have already been seen to cause poor battery performance due to their background processes.

The Battery Settings is used to identify those apps, then it is up to you what trade-off you want for battery performance and the app. Those apps can only be updated by the Developer and Meta is continually updating their suite of apps to address bug fixes with about 10 for each app in just the last month. Some apps are optimized very well to minimize battery drain when the apps are not in use, while others have no problem using your battery with background processes to build your Social Media graph for their benefit.

Specifically for the Meta apps, the same battery drain has been seen on Android phones, where the Google help site is filled with the same complaints. The idea that everyone uses them, so the developer should not be held responsible is a poor argument. They will continue to do what they do as long as those apps are still installed on the devices for a greater benefit to them. You will also notice that Meta does not have a Support Forum like Google or Apple for users to express their concerns and it is impossible to even call them directly with any complaint where they will work with you for a solution. That is by design and shifting the blame to someone else works out perfectly for them.

The test is really simple. Remove the Social Media apps and compare your results. In the link I previously provided for app issues with Android phones, Snap was number 2 on the list behind Facebook. TikTok has been brought up before, but Facebook has been the consistent one causing the majority of the draining, probable due to the installed user base. You can even do it one at a time to compare the results instead of cold turkey.

You have all the information there, and troubleshooting can be done easily for each app to compare the results. Once you identify the problem then you have a choice to make. That can either be contacting the app developer, leaving the app uninstalled, or wait for an app update. I am not saying Apple would not be able to do something to cripple apps that take advantage of excessive energy usage, and hopefully that is in the cards as well. My point is simply that updates to the apps are causing the problem.

I continue to see suggestions that the answer to the battery charge life problem can be found by examining the usage pattern of each app.

Then perform this test yourself. Since you already have the iPhone 14 with the same data and it is backed up, then reset your iPhone 16 to Factory Settings and do not restore that device from a backup. First get a baseline for your battery usage on the phone without the apps installed and you should be getting all day battery life, then add the apps one at a time to isolate the app that results in a significant difference in the battery draining. At any time you can restore your iPhone 16 from your iPhone 14 without any data loss. Report back which app(s) are seen as problematic.

If you look on the graph before you charged it, there is 5 hours where your battery dropped only about 25%. After it was taken off the charger there is 12 hours with little to no activity on your phone where the battery only dropped 13%. You should be experiencing all day battery life with those numbers, and I would recommend to charge your battery all night, every night using the Optimized Charging option so each day is started with a 100% charge.

To further identify the effects on how the apps are using your battery, you can also tap the "Show Activity" option on that screen shot which will show how much time the app uses the battery. I suspect TikTok is your most used app, which is not necessarily a problem and explains why it is the largest consumer. No further action would be needed as that would indicate you are a heavy user of TikTok and of course that will have the greatest effect on your battery life.

It you tapped "Show Activity" and found that very little time was spent using TikTok and that accounted for 58% of your battery usage, then that is what would identify TikTok as a problem app where you would see significant improvement by removing it. Or if you used TikTok very little and the time it showed for usage is very large, then that indicates that the app is being used in the background when it is not even open. In either of those 2 cases, it would beneficial to remove TikTok since it would be an app that you are not actively using very much anyway.

Because your iPhone is indexing files after it has been set up and also optimizing your photos for object detection using algorithms to detect faces and objects in those photos so you can view them using naturally spoken search terms. It will take about a week for those processes to finish in the background and the time it takes depends on the number of photos and if your phone is connected to power.

After a week, post the screenshot you see at Settings > Battery for the previous 24 hours that includes the battery graph and the top apps consuming the battery.

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share an update regarding the battery issue I faced. Here’s what worked for me:

First, I backed up my iPhone via iCloud. Then, I upgraded to a beta version and subsequently turned off beta updates. After that, I connected my phone to my Mac and selected the option to restore it, which wiped the phone and reverted it to the normal, non-beta iOS version. Finally, I restored my data using the iCloud backup.

This process resulted in a significant improvement in battery life.. almost doubling it. I hope this helps anyone who has been experiencing similar issues. Thank you!

This worked for me : Improve Battery Life

To be clear, it is no surprise that performing steps such as these will improve battery life:

  • Reducing Screen Brightness
  • Turn off Background Refresh
  • Limiting Location Services

That is not a solution to the problems that users have posted about and they are not looking for these minimal improvements by partially crippling these features. What users have found success in is resetting the phone using a computer and compare the results before any data is restored from a backup. This should be the first thing that is done before any post about poor performance so that there is an apples to apples comparison

Here’s my update. My 16 pro is no longer running hot. That’s a good thing. The battery life is still not the greatest but when I went to choose a photo to upload it said my photo app was still indexing. I have over 56,000.00 photos. A quick search read that indexing does use minimal battery since it’s running in the background unless you have a huge library, which I do then it uses more. I will keep an eye out and see where I am at after one week. If indexing is complete and battery is still draining then I will return it. Hoping I do not have to because I really love the phone. So if you’re like me with lots of photos wait until the indexing is complete. This is day 4 of indexing.

Have you removed the suggested apps yet and compared your results as Jeff Donald advised. As others have noted, they were able to pinpoint the exact apps causing the problem and Telegram and Meta apps top the list. At some point those developers are likely to remove the bugs in their apps so they do not consume so much energy, but each one needs to hear the feedback from their users to force a change.

Apple provides you the information in the Battery settings so you can make the decision on how important that app is compared to how much battery it consumes. Apple has done its part, now it is up to you.

So did anybody find any solution for this or we just have to wait for Apple to fix it?
Because I have iPhone 16 Pro brand new two weeks old maybe 3 and my 6 years old iPhone 11 has almost like equal battery life to the 16 pro that’s crazy.

There are some in this thread that have fixed it and other similar threads as well. Here is the post provided by neutro_phill:

Update 2: My battery life has improved significantly on the 3rd day. Only charging it overnight (with nightstand on). It’s 11 am here and my battery level is 93%. Ending my participation here in the thread and all the best to you all. Keep it charging all night.

Not sure if you have tried any of the other solutions provided, but these are the most common:

  • Remove Facebook and WhatsApp, then compare your results. These apps from Meta have been running background processes consuming your battery even when not using the apps.
  • Reset iPhone using a computer

As I explained to support. My usage habits and environment have not changed this week as compared to the weeks before upgrading the phone. Top 5 in the past 24 hours: Instagram, messages, Home Screen, YouTube, mail, …

Your usage habits have not changed but the Meta apps have. For example, Instagram has been updated 10 times in the last month with problems not only seen on new devices with the latest iOS update, but also with older versions as well. With the Meta apps, it is the background processes that are consuming the battery even when you are not using the apps that indicate Screen Time usage.

After reviewing the posts here, what have you determined? For example posting the Battery Usage screenshot helps to identify out of control apps abusing the background processes. Many of these have been identified as Meta apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, which may be resolved by an update by Meta for bug fixes. Removing them and then comparing battery performance would be an essential troubleshooting step.
