how to reactivate camera on MacBook Air

The camera on my MacBook Air isn't working... no app is associated with it. How do I reactivate it

Have you tried restarting the computer?


Try launching PhotoBooth to see if the camera is working.


Check the Apple System Profiler (Option-click the Apple menu & select the first item) to see if the camera hardware is listed. If the camera's hardware is not shown, then the laptop has a hardware issue of some sort which will need to be repaired. Even if the camera hardware is shown, there still could be a hardware issue.


Check the Security & Privacy System Preferences/Settings to make sure the app you are using has permission to access the camera.

You can try booting into Safe Mode to see if the camera works, however, I have seen some systems where the camera is disabled in Safe Mode. If the camera works in Safe Mode, then it indicates you have an issue with some third party software.


Try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. A passing diagnostic is meaningless, but if an error is reported, then perhaps it could also be affecting the camera hardware.
