Restore ICloud Messages

Hi all, I deleted some important messages in iPhone. Which is backed up to iCloud.

The deleted messages are still showing in ipad which is reading from iCloud.

So I’m thinking the iCloud backup is still complete. It certainly looks the full amount.

If I switch off iCloud in the phone, delete the messages then switch iCloud back on, will it read the complete messages backup as the ipad does?

or are the message backups separate backups?

I have refrained from updating past 15.5 atm as it’s an older iPhone (XR) and about to get a new one but if that would help I would do it.

Thanks if you can help,

Steve

Messages are synced, not backed up. If you’re using iCloud messages on both devices it’s surprising that the iPad messages haven’t been deleted.

you can check your recently deleted folder in messages (tap edit, upper left) to see if the message can be restored.

I understand it’s not files in folders etc, but as I can see the lost messages on the other devices - seeing 18.8 gb (big I know) of message backup on iCloud they must be there somewhere. When I switch my iPad iCloud messages off they are gone from the pad.

It seems to make sense that if I restore from iCloud, the same cloud that my pad must be reading the lost messages from, it would restore all the messages.
